Re: Indianapolis Junior League
Hi!
I am a member of JL in Fort Wayne and I love it! It is a great organization that mostly focuses on charitable projects that benefit women and children. The JL kind of works like this, they train its members to help organizations, and then JL goes in to help a non-profit, and once it is stableized, kind of transitions back out of the project.
There are also tons of more short-term volunteer projects--one type are "done in a day" projects. For example my chapter just went in to a shelter for women recovering from drug use and painted their rooms so they are more homey and cheerful.
Also, JL is a great way to network and make friends. JL attracts tons of different types of women--everything from doctors, lawyers, teachers to stay at home moms.
I joined JL because I wanted to meet people and community service is really important to me. JL can seem a bit intimidating because it is a really well-organized group. My husband calls it the Junior League Machine :-) But the nice part of that is that you can sort of jump right in to making a difference, not spends months trying to find good projects, get in touch and get started.
There are some financial commitments, but mostly you are just giving of your time. You could check out Indys membership requirements on their website: http://www.jlindy.org/scriptcontent/index.cfm
I could go on and on, so let me know if you have more questions!
