Mac vs. PC

Hi

So my husband and I have always been PC users. Our laptop recently broke and we are looking into getting a Mac. Can you please tell me the pros and cons of switching to a mac? Is it hard to use when coming from a mac? Also if the standard notebook good for the everyday normal use?

Thanks for the help

Re: Mac vs. PC

  • DH and I bought a macbook pro and love it!!  The last time I used a Mac was back in elementary school, so I had to learn it all over again.  The first couple days were awkard - relearning to use buttons on the left side and navigating around, but the learning curve was quick.

Pros: more stable, starts up in like 2 seconds, very user friendly, comes with an option to load a windows operating system so you can use windows if you must, comes with great creative software suite

Cons: more expensive, windows is an extra cost if you must have it

  • after being a PC user for many years, we switched to mac a couple of years ago.  i haven't looked back since - it's so much more reliable than a PC.  it took a couple of weeks for me to be completely comfortable with the switch, but it's second nature now.

coming to work and having to use a PC sucked.

  • Macs, while more expensive, are beyond worth the extra expense.

You don't have to worry about virus' or purchasing expensive virus protection software. The all-around speed and performance is far superior to PC IMO.

It will take you a few days to get used to the keyboard controls and user interface, but after that it will be smooth sailing.

  • Thanks for all the great responses. Which Mac's do you have? My husband is the main one who will be using it and really he surfs the internet and does some photoshop work and that is about all. Do you think we would just need the standard?

    Thanks

  • Macs are super super duper user friendly.  It is so easy to organize and find files and folders.  And diito everything else PPs said!!

ETA I've had my macbook for 2 1/2 years and it is still going strong! They've done some upgrades since I bought mine, but that is all you'd need for net surfing, some photoshop, music, etc.  Dh has the macbook pro, and while it's very nice, it's definitely more than is needed just for normal computer use. He does graphic design on his, but I probably do just as much on mine and never wished I had the pro.

  • I have a regular MacBook - but with maxed out memory & ram

I use it for heavy duty graphics work and have no problems at all. If you're just using it for internet and some photoshop, you should be more than fine with the basic model.

  • oh and also - prior to purchasing the MacBook I have now (bought 3 months ago), I had an iBook G4 that lasted 5-1/2 years without any problems.

I know that's not a common lifespan, but it goes to show that if well cared for, a Mac can definitely stand the test of time.

  • I have a MacBook Pro that I've had for just over a year now and I'm still learning things on it. I tend to get frustrated if I can't get something to work and will launch my Windows XP virtual machine on the Mac to accomplish certain tasks. To this day I still don't know how to burn a stupid DVD and will go into my happy XP land and use Nero. I try, I get mad, I quit and do it the way I know how. I'm sure it's super-easy, but I usually don't have time to "look it up" or "phone a friend" so I just move on. I'm definitely not the poster child for switching. I'm far too impatient!

All that said, I still use it daily at home for web surfing, etc. It is my main computer other than my desktop at work. The hardware is great, the security and upgrades are nicer.

  • I stick to PCs. But that's because I prefer something that I can work on and fix quickly rather than waiting weeks to send into the shop and to get it back. As for viruses and such, setting the PC up with the proper anti-virus software when you first get the machine will take care of that at the start so no worrying about it.

  • DH and I both have macbook pros and love them! and then I use an imac? I think at work? Whatever the desktop is? It is great for design work! You should totally get one! You will fall in love!
  • Mac's all the way!!

I can't really think of any cons to getting a mac. They are easy to use and switching over should be easy if your already use to using a laptop.

Everyday use you should be very happy with a macbook. My DH and I share his macbook pro, but I use it mainly for e-mail, internet and recipes. I just started to get into iphoto (comes with the laptop). I never have to worry about a virus. Sure you could get a PC and spend $$ for anti-virus OR just not worry about it at all.

When you ready to buy don't forget to check apple's website because they sell refurbished mac and you can save a little money there and you still get your 1 year warranty and still have the option to get the 3 year apple care warranty before the year is up. My last 2 mac's were refurbished and they have been great.

If you still have questions let me know I'm happy to help.
