bugs eating collard leaves

I am growing collards and bugs are eating holes in the leaves... some leaves are almost completely gone.  I have not seen the bugs though.  What can I do to stop this?

Re: bugs eating collard leaves

  • That's what insecticide is for. It's best to identify the pest beforehand. Another option is to harvest earlier.

Your local extension office should be able to advise you about what type of pest you're dealing with, if you never actually SEE them, and how to approach controlling them. Good luck.

  • Odds are it's cabbage worms.  Have you seen white moths with a single black spot on their wings around?  Like this guy:

I just harvest when the leaves are young and blanch and freeze them.  They taste better that way anyway.

  • I haven't seen moths... and the collards right now only had 3-4 leaves... I can't harvest them yet.  I don't want to use insecticide because I plan to eat them... there's nothing earth friendly I can use?
