help with my work lap top...connecting to the internet
I hope this makes sense.
I got a work lap top this week that has wireless. At school I have to be connected to the internet through the internet port in the wall. I don't have wireless there yet.
When I come home I do have wireless. However, all I can do it get to the district web page and only the district web page.
I thought my IT lady set me up to be able to use it at home(and go to other sites) but I can't. She had me set up a new user log in/password that would allow me not to have to go through the school server but to be able to open it up anywhere.
Any thoughts?
Re: help with my work lap top...connecting to the internet
Ok, let me make sure I understand you.
You're trying to connect to your home internet, but the only page you see is your district page? What is your "district page?" For your school?
Do you click links and get nowhere? Does it say that the page "doesn't exist?" If you tell me what you see when you cant access a page, that will help tons.
yes district page=just the web pages for the entire school district/my school.
For instance I tried to go to google and I get
internet explorer cannot display the webpage
most likely causes
~You are not connected to the internet(which I am)
~The web site is encountering problems
~There might be a typing error in the address
I've tried with multiple site but nothing is working past www.insertschooldistricthere.com
I have full strength and can move around my work site very easy.
Having had this problem before, I can tell you that your problem is most likely that the computer is set to run through a proxy for internet.
Basically, this means that the computer is set up to look for (likely) your school's proxy server to connect to the internet instead of connecting directly, as most people's home computers do. You probably can get to the school's web pages because most places that run a proxy server put in exceptions for certain sites, so that you don't have to go through the proxy to get to them.
I hope my explanation there made sense... My words haven't been working lately.
Anyway, the solution to this is to find your connection settings and change them so your computer doesn't look for a proxy server when you are at home. Unfortunately, without the help of your IT people, you'll have to turn this setting off whenever you come home and back on whenever you get to work.
Assuming your work computer has Windows and you're using Internet Explorer, here are some handy instructions to follow. If you're using something else, there are plenty of resources out there for how to change your proxy settings.
Hope that helps!
That sounds exactly like what she talked about. I thought she had set it up to work for me when I was on my "home" account log in.
Thanks!
That fixed it!
Thank you SO much!
You are very very welcome!
