Where do I start with new landscaping?
We just built a house and to cut down on costs we are doing the landscaping ourselves. After tough summer conditions we finally have grass. Now we need to fill in the front with flowers, shrubs etc.
I am not a gardener and do not know what would be good to put together. We are in Massachusetts and get full sun on our house. Does anyone have any ideas, have a bio with pictures, or know of any good websites that could helpme out?
Thanks!
Re: Where do I start with new landscaping?
A few resources to consider:
See what your neigbors have done and what you think you'd like to have in your landscaping
Visit your local nursery and pick the brains as to what works in your area
Hire a landscape designer by the hour. Many of them can put together a quick plan for you after a visit of an hour or less. It only cost me $50 to do this, and then I was off and running getting my own plants and doing my own landscaping
Our little Irish rose came to us on March 5, 2010
Don't drink the water.

Ditto Dr. Loretta's advice. Walk around your neighborhood and see what your neighbors have growing in their yards. If you see a yard you just love, go and ask the neighbor about his/her yard. I did this with a lady who lives not too far from my house. We were driving home and saw her in the yard, and stopped to ask her about her yard. She was more than happy to talk to us! In fact, she said she always wondered with all the work she does in her yard if anyone ever paid it any notice.
Also, one weekend, note how much sunlight your yard gets. Full sun, shade, etc. This will help you in determining what to plant. I think hostas are beautiful, but they'd die in my yard because I get full sun. And go to a nursery and look at plants. Find ones that you like or think are pretty. I'm not a fan of black-eyed susans. They do absolutely nothing for me although yellow is my favorite color.
You're at a good time right now to think about planting. Fall is a good time to draw up some plans for the spring. Each fall, I move stuff around and think about what I want to plant next year.

Think about what you want it to look like year round.
I planted all my spring-blooming bulbs right up front, so when they start to die out... they're still in front.
It would be better if I had planted spring bulbs in the back, then summer-bloomers, then fall, so that the current bloomers are always up front.
I was so excited to get started with all the spring-bloomers this past year, it didn't occur to me until too late to think about what it would look like later in the year.
