Who is your internet provider?

We have comcast and pay $45 a month for internet and were wanting to see what other options are out there, since our comcast sucks anyway. So how much is your internet, what company, and do you like it? Thanks!!

Re: Who is your internet provider?

  • We use clear and love them.  We haven't had any issues with them and with our service not working.  There haven't been any billing issues, either.  When we called to get it set up we talked to an actual person immediately, and the one time we called them (there was something weird with our e-mail address or something) we talked to a person there who was able to fix it, too.

Soooooo much better than stupid Comcast that we had in Boston and will never use again.  A little slower than the FIOS we were using, but much better customer service and we don't have to spend 2 hours each month fixing something they billed us incorrectly for.

It's $40 a month, but we have one of the little USB drives so we can take it with us when we run around Portland that makes it a tiny bit more expensive.  That way Jeff has internet access when he's on call in case he needs to fix something.  I think it costs $10 a month.

  • Clear is owned by Comcast BTW.

We have Verizon Fios and we like it. We pay $43.99 a month, so not cheaper but we have 15mb download and 5mb upload.

    Where did you find that?

I know Comcast invested in them, along with other companies like Time Warner, Google, and Intel.  But I haven't seen anything that says they're outright owned by them.

Hmmm...do I have to have cable/phone anything with them in order to get the USB style internet? Until I have a permanent home, I won't have internet, but NEED it! I'll have my laptop, but I'd rather not sit at starbucks every evening!

  • You definitely don't need cable or phone.

Jeff says that you can get just the USB thing for internet for about $20 a month which would be great for a laptop.  I'm not sure how up-to-date his info is, though, since we've had Clear for about 9 months now.  : )

I guess the benefit to signing up for their normal internet is that you get a modem that you can hook into a router and provide internet for your entire home.  The USB will work in any computer, but it only works in the computer it's plugged in to and won't provide signal to anything else.

    I hope that made sense!

  • I guess you're right, Clear is not owned by Comcast though they are a major backer of the service.

Thanks! I think we're going to look into that, as long as we don't have to sign a contract (since we'll probably get cable/internet when we move into an apartment.) Dh is concerned that it's really slow-does your DH think so?

  • I don't think it's slow.  And I trust Jeff when he says he doesn't think that it's slow.  But, because it's wireless if you don't set it up correctly (which can take a little bit of time tinkering around with) you can get lag and drop outs.  He's able to play Warcraft with his friends without any issues, and we're able to watch TV shows online (HD Hulu, ABC, whatever) without any trouble.  It's better than DSL but slower than cable.

I'm pretty sure they give you a one week trial for free.  Also, even though you can get the hardware and such from Comcast and Best Buy, you can get it through Clear.  I'm assuming if you were to get it from someone else, you'd have some sort of installation or set up fee.  But if you get things through Clear they just send you the modem or USB and any software you need through the mail.

If your DH wants to ask more questions you can e-mail me and I'll pass them on to Jeff - it's jeffanem at gmail dot com
