Volunteering

I'm starting to look into volunteering opportunities to keep myself busy and become a little more immersed in my area.  Do any of you volunteer?  How often and what do you do?  How did you get started in whatever activity you're involved in?

Re: Volunteering

  • Do you go to church? I've always volunteered with my church and it is also a great way to make friends. I usually volunteer with the jr. high kids.

Also, animal shelters almost always need volunteers. (in keeping with the theme of your pet post below. Wink

  • Well, I'm Jewish so I don't go to church, but I'm still looking for a synogogue to join in my area. It would be a great place to start from.  It's funny that you mentioned the animal shelter idea because I thought of that yesterday and I'm planning on seeing what help I can provide in that realm.
  • One thing you might consider would be fostering a cat or kitten for an animal rescue group. Not only is it a form of volunteering for them, but you can also get a feel of what it would be like to own a cat. I don't know if you are familiar with fostering, but basically, you'd keep the cat/kitten in your home until the rescue found them a "forever home".   They need lots and lots of foster homes right now for all of the kittens. 2 birds with one stone, right? Just an idea!

  • I just printed out an application for the animal shelter in Mission Valley! I just have to send it in, now. I really want to do something like that, I'm sure there are rescue groups too that need help.

Fostering is ALWAYS an option, just a more time consuming one :) Either one is awesome, though! Good luck!

  • I don't volunteer here, but we do accept volunteers at Helen Woodward (I work there).  It's a great place, but a bit out of the way unless you live in the area.  But worth it if you love animals!  I highly recommend volunteering in the adoptions or education departments but I might be considered biased.  :)
  • It sounds like volunteering at an animal shelter is the way to go!  I will definitely look into it.  It's great that so many of you volunteer during your free time and it's really encouraged me to start doing so.
