New here: what should I look for in a laptop

hi ladies,

I am completely lost for technology. I had only one desktop (Dell) dated 2001. I really never needed major features and or software. However, due to age I really need to get a new pc. It will be actually cheaper to buy one rather than update the old one and clean it up from all the junk my nieces put on it (limewire anyone?)

So what should I look for? I only use my laptop to write papers, do excel spreadsheet for dh and I use ppt to do cards and others.

I also planning to learn photoshop and to start organizing my pics so I may need plenty of memory (is called RAM, right?).

I was originally thinking of getting a MAC for virus protection, but I am not really hooked up to the net and the only programs I really use and download are skype and google apps. So now we were now thinking of a dell.

What should we look in terms of memory and other technical stuff that I do not even know what it means? Beside what we will choose, what should we look at?

What brand is your laptop? Do you like it?

TIA

Re: New here: what should I look for in a laptop

  • Make sure you can upgrade the hardware, including without buying brand parts.  For instance, I needed to upgrade my RAM (which you may run into) on my Toshiba for my Sims playing.  I was able to buy a RAM card, by a company other than Toshiba, and install it into my laptop fairly easily.  However, some laptops may not allow you to upgrade your hardware, or if you can, you need the parts by the company that made the laptop. As you're looking, make sure you ask about that.

    HTH!
