AIM vs. Gchat/Google Talk
Hi guys!
I wrote a post weighing the pros and cons of the Big Two instant messaging clients. Which one do you guys prefer?
Here's the post.
Re: AIM vs. Gchat/Google Talk
the people I chat to aren't on gchat, so there's no point of me downloading it. I like that it's adds the AIM buddies when I don't have access to it.
I also didn't know that you can add twitter and FB to AIM! Now I know!

IMO, the huge downside to AIM is that it's very US-centric. Everyone I knew at university used AIM, so it was kind of a holdover because everyone, technical and non- used it, but my Indian DH always gave me weird looks saying, "Why do you use AIM?! Who uses AIM?" After moving around a bit for work, I now understand his skepticism. Virtually no one outside the US uses AIM. Most of them actually use MSN Messenger, and I saw it running all over China (to the point that it had been banned in our office for distracting the engineers), and my Norwegian colleagues were using it for inter-office discussions until the IT department gave them something more secure.
The downside to GChat? It can be awkward if you're the type to leave your email open all the time. It's good if you want people to be able to contact you, but I don't always want the interruption while I'm at work. Especially from my MIL! (Haha! I actually get along really well with my MIL, so I don't want her to think I'm blowing her off because I don't have time to chat from my desk!)
that is true. My relatives overseas use msn messenger and QQ.
I use Trillian, and it's great -- can access google chat, work chat, AIM, yahoo chat from one spot. I know that's not the question that you asked, but there are way better clients out there.
ETA: Okay, I just read your post, and I see that you addressed it. Nevermind!
