DH has job opportunity in St Louis...

We could end up moving there!! So, can anyone tell me about the really good suburbs and school districts etc? I looked briefly at University City, but I am thinking I want a newer house than the ones I saw listed. Any ideas? TIA!

Re: DH has job opportunity in St Louis...

  • If you scroll through the STL board this question comes up alot and there's definite debate.

Hands down the best school district are: Rockwoods, Parkway, Ladue, Clayton.  Some people may argue a few other districts are good, but just recently they posted the top 1300 high schools in the nation and those are the districs on the list.

Where will DH's job be located?  The best suburbs are: Ladue, Clayton, Town and Country, Chesterfield, Wildwood.  But there are plenty of other pockets of nice homes in other areas.  West county is considered the "nicer" area, (Chesterfield, Wildwood), but there really are alot of good areas you can go to.

It really depends on what kind of house you're looking for and how much you're willing to spend.

  • I think no matter who you talk to, they're going to swear up and down where they live is the best place to live -- we love our little areas of Saint Louis!  My recommendation, is to find out where your DH is going to be working, and buy a home close to there.  Unfortunatly, even though we have public transit -- it's not that well used and/or convientent, therefore *everyone* drives *everywhere* which just means traffic is *always* bad. If you can find a house close to home then you'll relieve alot of that stress.

With school districts...is there something in particular that you're looking for in a school? (Diversity, higher test scores, smaller classes, special programs?).

With that said, Saint Louis Metro area is a great place to have a family. Even though I *Miss* the beach, and I don't necessarily like the winter, for the most part you can't go wrong here. We have alot of family friendly activities going on, alot of the attractions are semi affordable (aka: zoo, the best in the country IMO, and it's FREE or the science center...FREE).

If you have any questions or just need to bounce ideas off of, feel free to email me at lilmufish at hotmail dot com.  Good luck to your Dh with his possible job transfer!!

  • I'll speak on behalf of the Illinois girls and remind  you to not limit yourself to just the MO side. We have some really great cities and school districts over here. Edwardsville/Glen Carbon are amazing, as well as the O'fallon/Shiloh area which is growing. We also don't have property tax. I live in IL and drive to West county everyday, only takes about 30 minutes when traffic cooperates (which in St.Louis, can be a PITA no matter where you live).

  • The Lindbergh School District was/is ranked in the TOP 100 in the Nation (3 yrs in a row). It is located in what we here call South County, but mainly is made up of Sunset Hills, Sappington, Grantwood Village, Fenton and some unicoorperated areas.

We live in the Fenton part of the district (which is only a small part of Fenton). I feel we are extremely centralized in the area. It honestly only takes us about 25 minutes to get anywhere.

  • I don't know what Melodromatic is smoking, but IL has HUGE property tax. Property tax on my new house will probably be around $4k for the year.

What we don't have is some other kind of property tax that applies to things like cars (which they do have in MO).

Still, real estate prices are SO much lower on the IL side that the property tax doesn't even begin to make a dent.  I don't regret living on that side of the river myself.

So yes, definitely consider the IL side if your DH's job will be within an easy commute (basically, if he's working downtown).  If he's working in the western suburbs, the commute will be miserable and probably not worth it.

The school districts other people mentioned are good, but you'll pay big $$$ to live in those districts, especially Ladue.  U City would be a neat place to live, but it is within the city limits, which basically means private school. (Here, that means around $25k/yr.)

Commuting distance will be a huge factor, like they said.  Find out first where your DH will be working and try to find something as close as possible that fits your needs/lifestyle.
