Getting out of jail party

BIL is quitting his job (he works as a guard at his city jail) and his wife and I thought it'd be fun to throw him a party to celebrate him quitting and finally being able to get a job that uses his college degree (accounting) SIL wants to use Getting Out of Jail for the theme. Other than bars and the monopoly card of get out jail free I'm completely lost at what we could do for decorations, food and invitations. Any ideas? One more thing, I'm kinda nervous that this theme can be considered insensitive by guests. Should I suggest another theme? TIA!!

Re: Getting out of jail party

  • I don't have any decorating advice bt I wanted to say it's a cute idea. Assuming that you will invite friends and family who know about his job at the city jail I don't think it will be insensitive.
  • I love the theme! I think its funny!  I think you should stick with black and white stripes that look like the old jail uniform the monopoly guy has on. I think you could find similar invites and put that pic on a cake.  I would serve "jailbird wings" and make up names for other food and drinks.
  • Go buy a plastic set of handcuffs and a new nail file and bake a cake and put the cuffs on top and the "shank" poked into it. Also - make drinks/punch - call it hooch!

You could really do it up and have ramen noodles in a gallon freezer bag and make them that way.

I used to be a corrections officer - we threw a party like this - invite co-workers and friends. It'll be hilarious! I don't think it'd be insensitive since it's his profession.

  • For food, you can keep it really simple.

Maybe gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches and homemade tomato soup or spaghetti and meatballs? Just take average foods and put a gourmet twist on them.

You can serve them on the foam tray plates...

  • No real advice, but the theme is very cute.  I'm not sure who it would be insensitive to.  Keep and have fun.

I guess you could always just do a full monopoly theme.  Use the get out of jail card as a template for the invites.

  • I think you can find muslin bank bags and stuff them with coins and fake money.... as well as the hancuffs and jailers keyrings get a large accounting ledger and take our the pages and use them as well on the tables with the money bags and bills and coins write some numbers on them some in black pen and then make it be some in red. Sometimes at the party store by the kiddie goody bag stuff you can find little plastic play safes as well. Alos try doll house minatures... you might find a safe and some matreses to stuff with money. Good luck.

  • I agree, black and white decorations would be pretty neat!

  • You could play some 'jail' themed music like jailhouse rock, Folsom Prison Blues by Johnny Cash.
