During our last little BiWi experiment, I happened to be very motivated to make healthy eating decisions and stick to a regular exercise schedule -- I was only a few weeks away from heading to Burning Man to wear a tiny tutu in a wedding, and I wanted to look good. Since then, however, I have been a complete glutton. And a sloth. And my pants don't fit again. I hate that!
I was struck by KShiz's comment that it's hard to find balance and eat in moderation. I totally have that problem -- it seems that I'm either "on" or "off" my healthy lifestyle. As such, I've come to call it "the wagon." In any event, rather than getting ENTIRELY back on the wagon, I'm going to see if I can do the BiWi thing BUT find some moderation in there and splurge sometimes but take it easy other days, and not beat myself up about it either way. Just keep track of things to keep myself honest about why my pants aren't fitting at the moment. (Half a large Pagliacci pizza plus four IPAs plus large french fries day after day equals top button undone).
So...who's with me?

I am in. I need to be accountable for my food choices. I tend to be an emotional eater. I had a really stressful day last friday. I did not eat anything all day until dinner, where I had a plate of brownies and a beer.
Perhaps this will give me that moment of hestitaion I need. I did start something already today. I stocked my snack drwaer at work with fruit. My goal is one piece as a morning snack and one as an afternoon every day. My hope is to prevent the, IM STARVING, gorging at meal times.
What is BiWi????
BiWi stands for "Bite it and write it." It was KShiz's idea (I think) to have those who wanted to participate write down everything we eat every day. The idea is to hold yourself accountable for the food choices you make and help identify patterns (for example, you notice that every time you pass a certain person's desk you eat a mini-Snickers bar out of the candy dish). I noticed that I tend to stuff my face as soon as I get home with whatever is handy, which is usually potato chips and spoonfuls of peanut butter (yep -- right out of the jar).
That realization motivated me to buy apples, carrot sticks, and other healthy options to have on hand to stuff my face with as soon as I got home.
Well then count me in! Should we start with Monday (today) and go through end of day Friday?? What do you usually do? Do you also note exercise?
My current problem is that I am at the mercy of the rest of my household. My ILs life revolves around food and meals and wine and cooking. Yesterday for lunch my MIL made a 4 course Chinese feast complete with banana-rum-phyllo pastry with chocolate ice cream for dessert--a 2+ hour sit down extravaganza. Then homemade pumpkin ravioli with lots of butter for dinner. Just the usual Sunday. Thank god I started running again.
I'm in! I am on track right now since I joined a Biggest Loser competition at a local gym. I am carrying around a food and exercise journal and being very honest....if I don't want to see it on the paper, I won't eat it!
My problem is exercise. I'm not a big fan, but I am loving this new gym. And, MH bought a heart rate monitor this weekend which helps me to see what I'm burning during exercise so that I can work to create a calorie deficit so I'll lose more than the 0.6 pounds I lost last week!
When we did it last time, we kept track every day, even the weekends. The idea isn't so much to force yourself to be "good," but to know exactly what's going on. I personally keep track of exercise too. (I have a tiny notebook for recording what I eat, but I keep track of other things on the calendar hanging next to my desk: I get a star for every day I exercise; a check mark for every day I meet or stay under my calorie goal for the day; and a plus sign for every day I don't drink booze. Again, I don't need to do all of those things every day -- I just like to be able to glance at the calendar and see a good pattern, like a few stars a week, especially when I don't have many check marks, and I try to have at least a couple of plus signs during the week.
Your second paragraph really gets at my struggle. MH and I eat out practically every night, and it makes it hard to make healthy eating choices. Sometimes it just isn't meant to be and I do my best not to worry about it. That said, I'm not fitting into my pants at the moment simply because EVERY day has been a day I've chosen to not worry about it.
I get the feeling I'm not going to be seeing many plus signs on mine. How about a plus sign if I have only one glass of wine and not two?
I think that sounds perfectly reasonable.
And...um...yeah. I don't usually have many plus signs on my calendar during any given month.
It's 9:30 am and I am so hungry now....yummy!!!!! What a fabulous Sunday!
