web cam and software recs?

my dh's cousin wants us to get a webcam so they can keep in touch. neither of them is good with computers though, so it will be up to me to set up everything and pic a service, etc.

i've heard of skype, but i've also heard some mixed reviews.

what do you use and like?

Re: web cam and software recs?

  • I like Skype.  Sometimes my mom and I will both set up our laptops in our kitchens and "hang out" while we bake.  The only problems we've had were hardware issues (i.e. the microphone in Mom's cheap-o camera failing intermittently).

DH has been researching web cams lately because we want to buy one for my dad and stepmom so we can Skype with their twins boys.  If you're willing to spend more ($60), he thought this one from Costco was really good.  If you want to spend a little less, he liked this Logitech from Newegg ($45).

I'm sure you can find them for less, but these had good ratings.

  • I'm not much for Skype. but anything made by microsoft will be worth the price. I have my webcam built into my laptop and with DH in Dubai we wear the heck out of Live Messenger.
