What are your Christmas Traditions?
Every year DH and I have sushi on Christmas Eve and go drive around this BEAUTIFUL neighborhood that goes all out on Christmas lights and decorations. After driving around, we make a breakfast casserole for Christmas morning.
Re: What are your Christmas Traditions?
*We go to IL for Christmas Eve. They have the whole extended family over and Santa comes. After everyone leaves, MIL and I (She has no daughters or other daughter in laws) make Christmas Bread and Chi Chi Balls.
*DH Wake up with colby in the AM, open our stockings and go upstairs with BIL who lives at home. Take the traditional "Christmas morning pic" with me, DH, BIL and Colby.
*Have breakfast, open gifts.
*Go to my parents house for Christmas morning
*Go to my moms, moms house for my extended family and gift exchange.
DH and I are trying to establish a few of our own but other than decorating together, we really do not have any, we still just go along with our parents traditions.
An American Girl's Travels
A few weeks before Christmas, I make tamales with my grandma and my mom.
SO and I stay the night at his parents' house Christmas Eve and are there Christmas morning and then we go to my parents' house.
I suppose that's not much of a tradition except for the tamales.
dh and i don't have any for us, but i have lots w/my parents.
my favorite is the santa trail...which they still do for me
basically, 'santa' enters from the chimmney, goes upstairs to my room to make sure i'm sleeping, then goes down to the tree to put the presents out. So, he leaves a candy trail along the way/drops candy as he goes.
we also always go to a candle-lit christmas service, eat a family meal (w/whatever relatives are in town) at my grandpa's farm, have a simple/easy meal on christmas eve, exchange gifts, often times we watch Christmas Vacation, etc..
We always go to a candle-lit Christmas eve service.
We open one gift each at my parents house on Christmas eve.
DH and I go to my parents Christmas AM to open gifts and have our "Christmas bread" - like one large cinnamon roll with lots of icing and red and green sprinkles.
Then we go back to our house and have our own little Christmas, before the extended family Christmas celebration in the afternoon. I love all of it except the extended family part, lol.
So far we only have had time for one tradition.....we open our stocking stuffers Xmas Eve. Hopefully we wil be able to start a a tradition of having breakfast for dinner on Xmas Eve as well.
These are some of the traditions we have during christmas time
Drive around town and look at Christmas lights
Go to a local church for their interactive nativity scene / story
decorate sugar cookies
go with my family to see a Christmas movie on Christmas Eve
Go back to families house after said movie for subs sandwiches and mostacolli
Oh and a few years ago we started a new tradition on Thanksgiving night where we drive to our local mall and electronic chain stores to gawk at the lines of people.
Every year, I :
- Can cranberries with my mom before Thanksgiving
- Make pizzelle with mom
- Shop of a Christmas Angel
- Read the family tree on Christmas/Christmas Eve
We've moved around a lot the last few years and DH has had to work Christmas Eve and/or Christmas Day, so we don't have many established traditions, except to just fit in our celebrations where we can.
We do always have grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup on Christmas Eve. ?I make tons of kinds of cookies throughout the holiday season. ?My mom has given my sister and I an ornament every year since we were born, and DH and I have started a tradition of exchanging them with each other. ?
When we were little, my mom was a teacher, and would not have time to decorate the house until school got out for the holiday break. ?But, my sister and I would beg & beg for decorations. ?So, she started the "December 1st Box." ?We put a few of our favorite decorative items in it, and we could get that out and put those things up on Dec. 1st (we'd also get out the Christmas books & music). ?I still do the Dec. 1st box at my own house. ?
We don't get a tree until about the 15th, because I like a real tree, but I like to leave it up until Ephiphany. ?
The weekend after Thanksgiving, we go to a tree farm and pick out our christmas tree, then go out to cracker barrel after
DH decorates the outside of our house like Clark Griswald does.
On a specific day in Dec. we go to Macy's and buy our yearly Christmas ornament.
I host Christmas eve dinner for the ILs
We also go driving around the neighborhoods to check out all of the christmas decorations.
-Church on Christmas Eve before we eat dinner at my aunts' home or we go at the midnight service which is always AWESOME!!
-Christmas Eve is always at my aunt's home on my dad's side. She lives 30 minutes from us so it isn't much a drive which is nice. We used to open gifts on Christmas Eve (we are Swedish and that's what the Swedes do), but haven't done that since I was a kid. DH has never celebrated Christmas Eve with his family so he likes going with me and my family.
-Christmas Day (lunch) is at my parent's home with my mom's side of the family. We pick up my grandma and bring her with us. In the afternoon we go to DH's parent's home and celebrate with them and his brother.
-Read Jesus' birth story in the Bible on Christmas morning before we open gifts.
- DH and I always exchange our gifts early
- we also always to the movies on Christmas night ( i thought this was wierd that he did it before we met, but not it just seems right)
-His family stays at our house Christmas Eve and we do breakast and gifts with them in the morning, then go to my families for the afternoon,
Well our Christmas Traditions were
- Going to DH's Nana's on Christmas Eve for dinner and then doing a gift exchange.
- Going to my parent's house after Nana's to do a one gift early exchange.
- Every Christmas morning we go to one of the parents' houses (alternating) to open presents and afterward go to the others.
- On Christmas afternoon we go to DH's aunt's for Christmas dinner.
- Christmas evening we go to my aunts/uncles houses to see the rest of our family.
All of these were our tradition, but this year it doesn't look like we will be able to make it back to our home town. A year and half ago we moved 9 hours away. Last year we made it in, but this year our jobs look like they will prevent us from making the trip. If this is the case, we are going to start a few new traditions of our own this yearDecorating after Thanksgiving
Church on Christmas Eve
We always stuff stockings!!
Lighting the advent wreath (ect ect).
