If you have taken a LONG car trip with baby...

Can you give my any advice? ?We are driving out to Michigan (14-16 hours) and breaking it up in either 2 or 3 days, depending on how Ben does. ?If you've ever taken a long trip with your baby, what did you do to make it easier/more comfortable on DC? ?I was thinking of bringing some soft toys, his baby music cd's and books and sitting back there with him for an hour here or there to keep him company. ?I am still BF'ing so will make frequent stops to feed and get him out of his seat...

Also, has anyone ever used a hotel crib? ?Do you trust them safety wise? ?We are bringing our PNP, but were hoping to put it our car-top carrier and not use it until we got out to MI. ?

TIA!!?

Re: If you have taken a LONG car trip with baby...

  • We drove to NC w/ Owen when he was 3.5 months old & to upstate NY several times.  O does really well in the car normally, so that is huge.  He sleeps some, but also seems to do pretty well keeping himself entertained.  I bring lots of toys & keep them up front w/ me.  Then, when he tosses one out of his seat I can reach back & give him a new one.  We stopped for a lot longer than we normally would to let Owen eat, stretch, play etc.  We would spread out a blanket or just let him sit & crawl around on the grass.  We did have some of his CDs for when he needed to calm down, but mostly just listened to whatever we wanted.  Occasionaly DH & I would sit in the back w/ him for a little while, but we tried not to do that very often.

The biggest pieces of advice I have are lots of things to entertain him, & take frequent, long stops.  It isn't a race to get there.

We have used hotel cribs.  I'm not crazy about the metal ones, but they are ok.  Most hotels tend to have pack & plays, which I prefer.  We bring our own sheet & blanket & that makes me feel better about the whole thing & makes it familiar for O.

    Good luck!

  • Oh good lord, I do not want to scare you but good luck!!! Maya was terrible in the car at that age, and she would scream and scream even for just 4 hour rides to Vermont! We drove to Florida last year with her, and trust you me, I will never, ever, ever drive with that child in the car for longer than 3-4 hours until she is at least 12! haha! Honestly, if she was old enough to give Benadryl you better bet your ass I would've given it to her to sleep! (Mother of the year move, I know!) I suggest stopping as much as possible to let him out of the car and stretch, and play. I know one of the biggest problems for Maya in the car was the fact that she was facing backwards in her infant seat. Now that she is front facing we have less issues in the car, but she is still terrible!
  • GL with driving and have a fun trip!! I hope Ben doesn't cry the whole time...
  • we havent been THAT far with the boys but tony hate hates hates to ride!  (well, the more i see that, he hates riding when don is with us usually for me hes fine)  but anyways... vinny adn tony have their milk to sip on since theyre older but back in the day i would have toys for them and books for them to toss or look at.....

good luck! ill send good ride dust your way!

  • We just went to VT this past weekend.  The trip was 2.5 hours, so not as long as yours but what helped us was planning our departure time from home around Brianna's nap time.  That way she would sleep for some of the ride.  Make sure to bring favorite snacks or toys.  A portable DVD player was a godsend for us!  And... take your time.  If you need to stop to let the poor kid run around or have a break from the seat than do so!  Don't rush it and make sure you pack everything you need. Theres nothing worse than driving for 5 hours and then noticing you forgot his lovey or something like that!!!  Ben is still young, so he might do ok.  Its when they start walking, running and being very active then its a problem!!  GL!
  • I forgot to add the crib question...

We have used a hotel crib before and it was ok.  It did the job for the night.  When we were in FL they had Graco PNP's at the resort we were staying at. And they were great.  But I always bring my own bedding-sheets,blankets and pillow for Brianna.  I always think that she'll feel better, safe, warm and sleep better with her own "stuff" .  = )

  • Thanks for all the suggestions! ?Wish us luck! : ?)
  • We haven't done car trips that we THAT long, but a 4 hour ride to upstate NY is something we do a few times per year and we stay in a hotel.  I have a cheapo portable DVD player if you think that a cartoon might keep Ben amused for part of the trip - my kids sometimes like it but alot of times they sleep most of our trip, so that is nice!

As for hotel cribs, most of the time I've found that they ARE pack-n-plays.  There is one place that we stayed that had a metal-framed portable crib and that was fine too - no safety issues with it.  If you're taking up the space to bring your own PNP anyway, though, I'd just use that because what you are going to get is probably going to be the same thing!

Otherwise, your plan sounds fine.  Just take your time and stop when you need to - you'll make it there!
