So sad about the cold

I know I can't complain about our weather compared to many people, but I feel sad about my garden.  Our weather just changed to the 40s, with a few dips into the 30s.  All of my plants look miserable.  Even the Autumn Joy have no joy.  They have beautiful blooms, but look wilty.  I expected most of my garden to die back (lots of perennials), but it looks shocked.

What did you do to prepare your garden for cold weather?

Re: So sad about the cold

  • It makes you sad to see fall sometimes, doesn't it? We're just starting to have upper 40 degree nights and days in the mid-60s. My vincas are starting to yellow. Around mid-October, I pull out all of my heat loving annuals. I add mulch to the perennials and trim them back a little. Then I plant some pansies to add a little color to my barren beds.

I try not to think about the upcoming cold weather and get busy planting bulbs. I just spent this past weekend planting a couple of hydrangeas that I had in planters and a Frost Proof Gardenia.

Have you started planting any bulbs yet? Maybe that will lift your spirits a little.

  • That's a good idea to get busy planting bulbs. Especially in my area, bulbs do well. The struggle I have are the squirrels. My neighbor feeds them peanuts which they bury in my yard. They dig around and take a bite out of each bulb.

What is a frost-proof gardenia?!  I love gardenias. They are not designed for WA, but I bought two anyway (reminds me of NOLA). One of them still has a couple of blooms.

  • It's a new gardenia that is supposed to withstand the cold better. Here's a link -http://www.brighterblooms.com/product/frost-proof-gardenia.html

I hear it's also not supposed to be as picky about soil as other gardenias. It's hardy in zones 6-9. I'm in zone 7b and thought I'd give it a try this year. August Beauty Gardenias do well in my area too.

Sorry about the squirrels digging up your bulbs. Have you tried those wire cages or placing chicken wire over the bulbs?

  • I'm actually kinda happy about the cold weather.  I got totally attacked by chiggers in my veggie garden and avoided my garden for a while.  I went to do some fall clean-up and the chiggers got me again!  I'm hoping the cold kills them all so I can finish what I need to do.  I have a ton of work to do out there!
