Does anyone have experience using a maya wrap?

I got one from a friend, and I've read the instructions, and watched the video online, but I still don't think I'm wearing/using it correctly.  Tyler does not like going in, and he doesn't look comfortable.  His head gets bent at an awkward angle, and it looks like his head is lower than the rest of his body.  He is also totally engulfed by the cloth, and I'm afraid he would suffocate in it.  I really need someone to come over and show me in person how to adjust it.

Re: Does anyone have experience using a maya wrap?

  • I just looked at the website and all the pictures are older babies. I am sure when your little guy gets a little bigger he will fit more comfortably. I had a wrap I used a few times and Maddox just didn't seem comfortable in it until he was about 8lbs or so which wasn't until he was about 12 weeks. At that point he had more body control and I started using the Baby Bjorn. The wrap just seemed very awkward, although...that is the postion they are in utero. Supposedly they are most comfortable and content in that position.
  • One of my good friends uses a Psling constantly with her newborn and the Maya wraps are really similar.  I'm actually going over to her house next week for a "sling tutorial" lol!  Her baby is already 8lbs or so though, perhaps that's it.  She did say that it takes a bit of work to find the right length and position, but once you get it right the sling is priceless and keeps her little girl very content.
  • I never used the Maya wrap, but I know the sling I used with my son recommended waiting until the baby was at least 8lbs. (I'm guessing your little man is still under that?) Under 8lbs and there is a risk of the head being tilted and potentially making it difficult for the baby to breathe.

Otherwise, maybe you can find a boutique in the area that sells your wrap. Often times the sales associates are trained in how to adjust the slings/wraps.
