At Work Retirement Party

I was giving the honor of planning and hosting a retirement party for a co-worker.  The party is going to be on-site.  He has worked for the company for 43 years.  I really don't know this person very all as he as only been apart of my group for the past 3 years.  I could use any idea's on decorations and any other ideas that we could do to make this a special day for this person?

  • Does your office collect money to buy gifts? When the teachers at my school retire, we all chip in for a nice gift - when my mom left she got a bracelet from Tiffanys.

  • It would depend on how many people and the tone of your office.  I work in manufacturing with 250 people.  We do an "open house" type thing with cake and snacks in our training center.  We invite the retirees families and people just stop in as they can.

For management we also have drinks and appetizers at the country club.  Again, the family is invited.  We give a gift to the retiree and to their spouse.  I always thought it nice that they gave something to the spouse.

In this case, I'd ask someone that knows them better for their thoughts.

  • I agree that it depends on the work environment.

The last retirement party that I went to, they arranged for her special friend to be there as a surprise.  We all chiped in money and they had a great smattering of appetizers.  Drinks were purchased by the individual.  They also had a slide show.

One thing that really made it special was that one person got up and said a funny story and ended with how much she'd miss the person.  Then she invited others to do so.  We were all teachers, so no one had a problem getting up in front and speaking.  Not sure what you do, but maybe you can prep people, like have people come with a story about the retiree.  You (or someone else) would need to get the ball rolling.

    GL!
