What can you all tell me about either of these areas? There's a possibility that we'd relocate to one or the other, and I'm not at all familiar with AR. We're used to rural areas, so that's actually not a bad thing if things aren't terribly close. However, I do need to be within easy (20-30min) of at least a Wal-Mart...I'd go crazy otherwise. A Target and/or a mall is a bonus.
Also, specifically for Fayetteville, do you have any idea how much rent would be (in general) for a decent house (maybe 2-3 BR, 2 bath)? We're not familiar enough with any particular part of town to know about neighborhoods, but we're really open and might even prefer the surrounding area (other smaller towns, etc) as opposed to right in the middle of town. We'd probably rent until we'd been there long enough to know where we'd like to live more permanently and buy. We don't have to live in the Ritz, but we don't want a "bad" neighborhood either.
Re: Tell me about Fayetteville &/or Texarkana areas
Fayetteville is twenty minutes from the home of Wal-Mart so they are everywhere. There is a nice mall there. Two theaters. Target, Kohls, PetSmart. There are some nice restaurants. I don't know what the rent is like.
I lived in the "country" most of my life and Fayetteville was the "big city" for me. lol.
Isn't the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville? That might be something to consider. I live in Conway and it has 3 colleges/universities which can be annoying in regards to traffic, noise level in rental communities and how crowded it gets in stores.
But, I *think* it snows in Fayetteville more so than Texarkana, if that matters..lol. I drive through Texarkana often to get home to my family and it looks pretty decent.

Not sure if you're still looking for info about these areas, but I just came across this and can offer my two cents. I've lived in Texarkana, Texas nearly my entire life and it's really not a bad town, especially to raise a family. There are two Wal-Marts, one on the Texas side and one on the Arkansas side, a Target, a mall with Dillards, JCPenney, Bealls, Sears, and a lot of normal mall stores, GAP, American Eagle, Victoria's Secret, etc. Texarkana has experienced a lot of growth in the past few years and north of the interstate on the Texas side there are several shopping centers home to a Cinemark movie theater, Old Navy, TJMaxx, Best Buy, Staples, Bed, Bath and Beyond. Before the addition of these stores everyone used to joke that the only thing to do in Texarkana was go out to eat, as we also have almost every chain restaurant in the US in town. If you would prefer to live in a rural area the surrounding areas of Atlanta, TX, New Boston, Tx and Ashdown, AR all have Wal-Marts and are decently sized small towns, with cheaper rental properties than in the Texarkana city limits.
As far as housing goes it really depends on the neighborhood in which you live. There are four school districts in the Texarkana city limits, Texarkana, Tx ISD, Texarkana, AR ISD, Liberty-Eylau ISD, and Pleasant Grove ISD. Typically houses in the Pleasant Grove area are the most expensive as they are newer and many times larger. The school district is rated an exemplary school in the state of Texas and football, volleyball, golf, tennis and band regularly compete in at least area finals. Texarkana, Texas school district is the largest district on the Texas side of town and is comprised of many areas of town including the historical district close to downtown, Nash, and Wake Village. The school district is growing rapidly thanks to a thriving athletic program, and more college prep classes than any other school in town. The Texarkana, Ar school district is the biggest school in town as it is the only high school on the Arkansas side, where there are three high schools in Texarkana, Texas. Texarkana, Ar ISD recently switched all their elementary schools to magnet schools focusing on Arts, Sciences and Engineering, or Mathematics. For higher education there is Texarkana College and Texas A&M University in Texarkana.
That may be a lot more information than you were looking for, or you may not even need anymore. But, if you do want to know more about Texarkana and the surrounding areas please feel free to page me on this board. I'm pretty sure I can answer just about anything about this area.
