Need anniversary ideas!

Our first anniversary is coming up so DH and I are trying to find something to do. It's the first weekend in January so we need somewhere that maybe has winter activities. We like winter hiking/snowshoeing and are thinking about skiing but I've never tried it before (and we don't want to spend a fortune). We really want somewhere with nice views more than anything though. So...anyone have any ideas for places to go in New England? We're willing to drive a while to get somewhere nice :) And we're thinking of going for 2-3 nights. Thanks!

Re: Need anniversary ideas!

  • There are a ton of mountains in NH and VT within 2-3 hours. Since you're unsure about the down hill, try to find one that offers more (like what you mentioned, or cross country skiing, or tubing). I've been to Sunapee and they have a nice beginners area. I don't remember if they have much else. My MIL goes to Okemo for cross country. We may go up with her this winter. Maybe do a google search for the activities you want and choose a mountain that way?

  • Check out the Snowflake Inn, in NH.  They have a getaway package, and if you say you were referred by a friend you get another night free.

  • DH and I are in love with the North Conway area.  We used to go all the time.  We did a winter weekend trip to VT once but funny enough it was actually freakishly warm when we arrived.  We ended up not doing any winter activities, but more just checking out the area.
  • VT! We're headed to the Killington, Woodstock, & Quechee area in Nov. We usually go every year and it's a blast- so much to do! In the winter there's lots of people, there's great places to eat, and tons of package deals for romantic getaways at the inns and b&bs in the area. There's also lots of places for skating and cross country skiing.

Also, I love going to Newport, RI whenever and they always have lots and lots of winter activities. The mansions will be decorated for the holidays, I'm sure there's packages, and so many good places to eat and visit.
