Two things: 

1. I would add "in a timely manner".  Why wait until the last minute?  Check your calendar and decide either yes or no and move on. (can you tell this is a pet peeve of mine?)
2. I heard, and rather agree, that if you bring flowers you should bring them in a vase or offer to arrage them for the host.  This makes sense to me as you could actually be giving the hostess more to do at the time of the party.

I completely agree on NO flowers, unless it is already potted or in a vase. Potted herbs and orchids are fabulous, since they usually come in a nice pot at your local grocer.

Maybe add, Ask the host/hostess if they need you to bring anything. It is a nice gesture to ask, even if you are going to the Martha Stewart's house.
