Name Change Questions

Hello Ladies..couple questions.  Just got married and need to change my drivers license and social security card..what documents did you need at the DMV..I also have to change my address too. Do you bring marriage license..if so do you know if they will accept a photo copy or does it have to be the certified copy?  Also, what do they accept to change your address?

Thanks!

Re: Name Change Questions

  • Congrats!

I got married in cook county so this is what I did:

    1.  Went to the cook county courthouse and got several certified copies of my marriage license.

    2.  Went to the DMV with my old id and marriage license.  They issued me a new id.  Here is a link for the address change:

    https://www.ilsos.gov/addrchange/

    3.  Went to social security with my new id and marriage certificate.

I don't think it matters what order you go for #2 and 3.  They just want to see the marriage certificate.  I would bring your original.  They don't keep it.

  • yes, get a couple certified copies of your marriage license. I also had to change my address and name on my driver's license- I brought the certified marriage license copy (from cook county courthouse)  and a ComEd bill (it still had my maiden name but that was fine.)

For the social security care I had to have my changed driver's license and certified copy of marriage license.

  • I went to the Social Security Office first, they needed an original marriage certificate and my i.d.

Then I went to the DMV, showed them my old license, marriage certificate, and brought in a couple pieces of mail with my new address.

It doesn't matter what order you go in. Go early if you can. I went when the SS ofice first opened was seen within 25 min and then went directly to the DMV which took me 20 min since I was also renwing my license and needed a new picture. FYI it's $30 for a new Driver's License if you are renewing. Bring cash or a mastercard cc, american express cc or visa debit account) At least that is all the accepted at the Melrose Park DMV.
