Moving to Boston! Neighborhood recommendations??

Hi Nesties,

My hubby and I are moving to Boston as early as November 9th.  We're looking to rent a great place---anything from something airy and modern to historic (we lived in the historic Fan in Richmond, VA).

We're in the young professional crowd (no pets, no kids) and want to stay away from student-heavy areas.  Our range is 1700-2100/month.  Places like the South End look aweome, but I wanted to hear it from 'the locals' about a) great neighborhoods or b) amazing apartments/houses.

Any advice is appreciated!!

  • I love the South End, Charlestown, and Back Bay. Your price range definitely works for those areas.

  • I'll ditto the South End and Back Bay areas.  I personally also really like Cambridge and there's lots to do/eat/see there but is a tad bit more suburban.  That and you could get students, but the vast majority of the Harvard/MIT crowd live on campus.
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • My husband used to live in the South End and I used to live in Cambridge so we spent a lot of time in both places.  We called his apartment our "city place" and mine in Cambridge the "suburbs" even though Cambridge really isn't a suburb.  The South End has great restaurants and is much closer to downtown.  Cambridge has a different "vibe" and I really like all of the cozy restaurants/pubs and live music venues..plus there are more parks and grassy areas.
  • stay away from Dorchester, Roxbury, Mission Hill area. You should be good with your price range though. I only know they bad places to avoid, not the good. If you need a realtor let me know, one of my friends is a realtor in downtown boston. Tom Brady is her neighbor

  • We live in Brookline and love it!  Do you have vehicles, if so one or two?  This can be a game ender in several areas in the city.  For example, we have one car, I take the T to work, my husband drives.  We pay $150/month for a parking spot which is average since there is no overnight parking in Brookline.  That is something to consider.  I love Brookline and Back Bay personally.  I know a lot of people love the South End but I'm not a big fan, it may sound silly but I never feel safe there, although they have great restaurants.  That's just me though.  I know tons of people who love it. Good luck!
