Moving to MKE

I am hoping to go to Marquette University starting in June for grad school. Right now we are living in Kenosha, but we are thinking of moving to MKE so that I won't have such a long commute and can see my boys more often. We are thinking about moving within walking distance of Marquette, so we don't have to buy a second car. What do you ladies think of the area around Marquette? Bad idea to live there with kids? What about safety issues? TIA

Re: Moving to MKE

  • Having gone to MU, I would highly recommend NOT living in the surrounding neighborhoods with a family.  There is a very high crime rate.  And living in the apartments around campus can be Partytown USA at times.

That said, Public Safety is VERY vigilant about keeping the campus and students safe.  You could probably call them and they would have some recommendations about where to live, or who you could contact to get that information.

Moving to Downtown Milwaukee (just east of campus) might work though.  There are some very nice apartments, even right on Wisconsin Avenue.  Look into Library Hill.  It is a decent walk, or a two minute bus ride to campus.

Good luck, it's a great school!

  • As much as I love living in an urban area I wouldn't live around Marquette campus with a young family. Crime is an issue but I would be more concerned with the loud partying from the students.

I have to disagree with pp's recommendation for an apartment downtown. They are likely more expensive than a single earning family paying for grad tuition and too small for a family with young kids than you'd like. You might want to check out further west (~45th street or further west) around streets like Wisconsin, State, or Wells. You'd be able to take the bus and I'm sure you can find some nice duplexes.

  • I would not live near Marquette with a young family.  Maybe try looking directly west, like wauwatosa or in western Milw, like jenileero rec. A bus runs directly down Wisconsin Ave. and I'm sure it would not be a long trip.
  • I haven't lived here very long (only a few months), so I'll tell you the little bit that I know :)

We live in a duplex in Shorewood.  You can catch the bus (15) & it'll take you straight down Oakland & has numerous stops.  There are a bunch of duplexes for rent around here & they're really decently priced for being such a nice area.  There are many families around here & its super safe.

    Good luck with your decision!

  • Like pps, I wouldn't recommend living around MU with kids.  I would study the bus routes (ridemcts.com is the website) to see what areas would be on convenient bus lines.  The 15 runs north-south and would put you downtown about 12 blocks east of campus, where you could catch several buses that would take you to campus.  The 10 and the 30 both connect the east side (north of downtown) to MU.

Also, if you'll be primarily commuting during rush hour times, the freeway flyers (bus routes numbered in the 40s) all stop near Marquette, at 10th & Wisconsin, and it would only be a couple blocks to walk from there.  Some of them serve park and rides, and others don't.  I live in a south suburb and usually take the 48, which serves Oak Creek, South Milwaukee, Cudahy, St. Francis and far southeast Milwaukee.  For example, if you found something within 1/2 mile of Kinnickinnick & Oklahoma, you would be a 10-minute walk from both the 48 and the 15.  I don't know as much about the other flyer routes, but those would be options from other neighborhoods.
