Have you ever heard of this? Presentation shower

My aunt called me b/c her friend had been invited to a presentation baby shower and they had no idea what it was.  At first, I thought it may be a shower where everyone can meet the baby, but the baby hasn't been born yet. The invite also says that if the guests like, they can bring their gifts unwrapped.  I then thought it may be a shower where the gifts are put on display for everyone to see and that the mom-to-be doesn't open them in front of everyone.  Anyone have any other ideas as to what this could be?

  • I believe it is where the gifts are all open and on display rather than having to sit thru them having to be opened one by one.

    Good...that's what I told them.

  • never heard of it

  • It sounds awfully tacky to me. Might as well send out a registry list and a mailing address if you're not going to take the time to individually look and appreciate each gift.

I wouldn't call it tacky - it is great for large showers.  My girlfriend did this at her shower because she had almost 100 people there.  As people came, she opened up the present and then set it on large tables to be displayed. I thought it was a fantastic idea.  Could you imagine sitting and watching someone open up 100 gifts?

  • idk.... It happens fairly often around here.  Maybe it's a "south" thing?

I see Bridal Showers more than Baby hosted this way, but either are acceptable.  It's often a table with all the gifts lined up and pretty cards saying who each item is from.  You send your gift ahead of time to the hostess' home. (Drop it off or have it delivered.)  For those who shop late they just have blank cards and add it to the table as you arrive.

The guests mingle and sit down for a nice dinner (they are usually held in the evening).  No games or anything.  The women are "dressed to the nines" for these type of showers.

At least that is my experience with them :-)

This!  Maybe it is a Texas thing.  They are often called a "Sip & See" if it is in the afternoon--in which case it is a very elaborate tea party an women wear hats with their dresses.

One of my friend's mothers insisted on a Sip & See for one of her bridal showers.  My friend kept calling it a Gulp & Gawk to irritate her mother!

LOL, that is exactly what my mom calls it. :)

  • Wow, it must be a Texas thing! I'm from the South, and I've never heard of this. I love Gulp & Gawk! LOL

    I love this!

  • I am confused by some of the responses. A "sip and see" where I am is when the baby is here and people come by "open house" style to sip and see the baby.

A presentation shower is when you bring your unwrapped gift and have it out on display so mom-to-be or bride-to-be doesn't have to unwrap them all.

I've been introduced to both only recently as they are the norm at my church. The presentation shower was very tacky to me at first BUT when you have a big church shower with 200+ people coming through, there is no way people will sit and watch that mess and the guests of honor can mingle. It also makes it come and go, which is my favorite kind of shower ;)

    (I'm in TX)

  • I hate sitting there and watching all of the unwrapping and the forced "oohs" and "ahhs".  It's a pack of diapers people, you don't have to act excited about it.  We've seen the same damm pack of onesies three times now.  Can I have some cake and a glass of that wine?

  • So, the hostess provides the cards that tell who the gift is from?
