netbook as only "computer?"

Our computer is nearing the end of it's life and I'm not sure it's worth it to fix everything.  DH bought it before we started dating so this thing is probably 5-6 years old (at least).  We only browse the internet and print stuff out, nothing else.  Will a netbook be enough for us?  We have high speed internet (Roadrunner) and I'm trying to figure out if we'll notice a change.  Our current computer freezes all the time to the point that it feels like we still have dial-up!   Oh, can you connect a netbook to a full sized keyboard & monitor like you can with a laptop?  I think the small size might be an issue for DH.

Thanks!

ETA- I read a few of the old posts about netbooks and they helped but I'm still a little worried about it being our only computer.  Thanks!

Re: netbook as only "computer?"

  • Netbooks are specifically designed to just be little Internet surfing devices, so if that is really all you do then having one be a replacement for your computer might be OK.  I personally would never do that, I think of them as a cool toy that will some day supplement my primary PC.

I think most netbooks have a VGA port, so you would be able to connect them to a monitor.  You'd want to check for that before buying one. But if you do that you'll also want a USB keyboard and mouse because otherwise you'll still be typing on a tiny keyboard and you'll have two monitors up.  To my knowledge there is no such thing as a netbook docking station like you'd find for a traditional laptop, because again, netbooks aren't really intended as a replacement for a PC.

Also, unless you have a network or USB printer it might be a pain to hook your printer up for printing.

  • Hmm, good to know.  Thanks.
