My poor little boy!

Aaron did not have a good 3rd quarter in school and his progress report for the 4th semester wasnt much better.  He worked his a$$ off, and i do mean worked it off, studying 2-3 hours a day on his french and algebra.  He cannot play football unless his grades were atleast a C.   Well he studied with his brother 6 hours in Sunday, 7 hours on Monday and took his exam on Tuesday.   Nik aced everything getting straight A's and 1 B.  Aaron, well despite his best effort and time spent, he got 4 A's, a C+ (in algebra) and a D+ in French.   He got D+s on both his French and Algebra exams.  He was devestated.  He wont be able to play football.   My heart was breaking for him.   Robbie and I kept telling him how proud we were.  I mean he worked so hard and i was so impressed.  We had already decided to get them something no matter what their grades were.   We reward for effort, so they got 2000 Wii points and bought three retro games.   I just cant help but feel like Aaron got shafted.   He knew his french!!  He was crying and everything!

Re: My poor little boy!

  • Aw, Kim that stinks! I think its great that you are rewarding his great behaviors and not just the outcome.  I wish more ppl did that with their children.  With those great behaviors he has eventually his grades will improve in those area's of opportunity!

Is it possible that he can go to summer classes to show his extra effort so they will let him play or is it a done deal?

  • Oh no!  Poor Aaron!  It's nice that you and Robbie are being so supportive about it.  I usually support those policies that kids have to have a certain grades in order to play sports, but given all his efforts it doesn't seem fair in his case :(  Sounds like he's just not a good test taker in those subjects!
  • Yeah, theres always got to be some sort of a loophole. I would talk to the principal or his guidance counselor and ask what he needs to do to be able to play. Explain your role and what you saw him do and work and I can't imagine that with 4 As and one D+  they're not going to give him some sort of loophole.

I dont know how he approached his grades, but when I was in HS, I had a lot of trouble doing some adv. algebra in chemistry because I'm dyslexic (undiagnosed until after school of course) but I always f'd up numbers and it took me a really long time to do some of the math on paper. I got most of the answers right, but like....time would be up for the test and I'd still have 1/3 of the page rest. So I talked to my teacher about it and he completely accomodated me, he spent about 2 days a week with me after school for a month thinking that would help me, he gave me extra homework (and Id get all the answers right), but I still just couldn't do it any faster. He KNEW I was working as hard as I could so he basically always let me finish the test at my lunch or after school. It brought my grade from a D+ one quarter to a B the next and an A the following.

Not always. Some teachers are against anything extra curriculur. Even at my level.

I would contact the school and see what can be done, Kim. He didn't fail, so he doesn't need to take the class over, but I wonder if he can be on some kind of probation? I 1000% agree with the rule that they have to keep thier graes up, but he tried so hard. Maybe he doesn't test well. Many kids don't deal well with the pressure- especially since he knew this was going to determine whether he could do football.

He doesn't have any learning disabilites right?

  • wait, does he know his final grades too? Final exams aren't the grade they take home for the semester. The most it could be worth when i was in school I believe was 20%.

I got a D+ on a final once but I still got a B for the semester. All he needs is a portion of a letter grade...I'll cross my fingers

  • Katie,

Of course theres some people that are out go get some kids but I think if they appeal to more people, one of em's got to be thoughtful!

  • Poor kid.  I'm sure it's not too comforting to him right now, but at least he knows he gave it his best effort.
  • I sent an email to the department head.  I want his exam reviewed.  I just want him to get the grade he deserves.  If he deserves the D+ then he will have it and pay the price but i still want it reviewed!  And i do NOT want my kids with that teacher next year.  You do not ignore parents emails.
