Regifting Gift Cards

Does anybody regift gift cards that they have? For instance, if you receive a gift card from a store where you don't shop, but you know somebody else who does shop there, do you regift the GC to that person?

Re: Regifting Gift Cards

  • I have not regifted them but I have used them to buy presents for other people. I don't think there is anything wrong with regifting them if it is some place you wouldn't normally go but you know someone who might appreciate it.

  • I only did this once.  I received a $30 Macy's gift card after my March wedding.  And we were going to an April wedding for a couple who had attended our wedding.

Their wedding gift for us had come from Macy's.  So rather than try to figure out what to buy them, it was easier to give them the $30 Macy's gift card.

And the points that I accumulated through my Macy's wedding registry, when they sent the gift card, I used it to buy another wedding gift for another couple who had their wedding in August.

I like the idea of using the gift card to buy a gift for someone else and then including a gift receipt.  My husband had a gift card to Men's Warehouse, and he used it this last Christmas to buy a nice gift for his dad.  I thought this was really efficient.

If anything, I would just go to the store and make sure the gift card is still valid and check the balance as well.

  • I've never regifted a gift card, but I've used gift cards to buy gifts for others, like a pp said. It's probably not the most kosher act in the world, but at least the money the gifter spent on the card isn't sitting in a drawer not being used.
  • I haven't done it but probably would if I received one for someplace I don't shop/eat at.

  • I have regifted some gift cards. We received lots of gift cards for our wedding and we already had received everything from our registry. So any gift card that was not a wedding design (I think it's a bad idea to regift a gift card that is themed for a certain event and give it for a different event i.e. a gift card with a wedding cake as a Christmas present), I regifted for Christmas/Birthdays that were only a month later.
  • I got a gift card to Starbucks and put it in DH's stocking for Christmas since we don't drink coffee and she is 'obsessed'. :)

  • I don't regift unused cards, but I use them to buy gifts for others - as pp have said. I'm always glad to have a use for them so they're not just sitting there a year later unused.

  • i don't have a problem with regifting gift cards as long as i've verified the available balance and it's not scratched up or anything.

I agree.  And...that being said, I wouldn't mind getting a "regifted" gift card.  After all, money is money and, if it is to a place I like, then I don't care how many hands it has been through.  I'm just thrilled it landed in mine!  LOL

Same here!  We have done this once only, and it was a Target gift card (we also had everything off our registry and no use for it), and for a wedding out of state that we weren't attending.

I'd be overjoyed to get a gift card, period (they're my favorite gifts, 'cause they give me reason to shop and get what I want).  I could care less where it came from!
