Which Kindle or Kindle like reader do you rec?

I was thinking of getting the Kindle DX for DH because it is bigger and he would probably like the size vs. the smaller, but I am not sure.

I'm open to any recs for readers.  I'm just now starting my fact finding mission to pick one out.

Thanks!

ETA:  One that reads PDF would be ideal.

Re: Which Kindle or Kindle like reader do you rec?

  • I had a Sony Reader 505 and loved it. Had to sell it off though, don't read often enough and we really needed the money.

I *think* the Kindle only allows books from the Kindle store to be displayed on it. Sony's models allow many formats, including PDFs.

  • I have the kindle 2 and have downloaded other books that weren't from the amazon store.

This might not be applicable.. but i just saw that the new version of the kindle coming out later this year will work internationally. I was bummed on a recent trip when I realized that I couldn't download new books while in Europe. Other than that, I really like the kindle.

  • Rumour has it that Barnes and Noble is releasing an eBook reader of their own within the next week.

It looks like it's going to have the eInk technology like the Kindle and Sony ebook reader, and it's also going to have a color touch screen along the bottom (if the comps are to be believed).  There's also talk of how it will be a lot more flexible with how you "own" the eBooks you purchase.  I actually just saw these articles today and I have to admit I am thoroughly intrigued because it seems much cooler than the Kindle!

I don't own either one but I've played with Sony's first version of their reader and the Kindle 2, and I prefered the Kindle 2.  It seemed snappier when flipping pages.

just my humble opinion....hold off, I think an apple tablet is coming ;)  There are lots of pros and cons, and I think an e-reader is awesome for some people, but "just another fad gadget" for most people.

An Apple tablet probably isn't going to be like an eBook reader though.  It's probably going to be like Apple's version of a netbook, and using a netbook to read an eBook, while doable, wouldn't really be that different than staring at your computer screen.  It's the eInk that makes all the difference in eye strain/comfort levels

  • I have a kindle 2, and it's pretty much my favorite thing in life.  OK, maybe it ranks behind my DH and my dogs, but it's definitely my favorite gadget by far.

Depending on how your husband will be using it, I would think about the regular size over the DX.  I find the small size to be one of the most convenient things about it, because I can sit or lay in any position, and it's always comfortable to hold - much more so than a book.  I'm not sure if that would be true of the DX.  It's also really great for travel because the charge lasts forever (mine will make it about 3 weeks without needing a charge, and I usually read about a book a week).

The eInk is easy on the eyes, pages turn pretty quickly, and I find the interface to be fairly intuitive.  I like that you can download the first chapter of any book for free, and I'm still amazed at how quickly an entire book downloads.  I love having pretty much instant access to any book that I want.

I also love that I have the kindle for iPhone app, so I whatever I'm reading on my kindle is also available on my phone.  It even syncs the pages for me, so if I have a spare ten minutes anywhere I can read a few pages, even if I don't have my kindle on me.  Very convenient.
