Seed Catalogs

I will soon be a homeowner & am so looking forward to vegetable gardening in the new year. Many gardening books mention seed catalogs, but give no further details. Which companies are good sources of  heirloom seeds, preferably small businesses? Are these catalogs on line or print? Other tips?

Re: Seed Catalogs

  • seed savers exchange is what you are looking for the are heirloom savers. They preserve endagered seed look up their site. Burpee is the main regular one they have some heirlooms also. GL I think Johnnys has some weird stuff too
  • Native SEED/Search is my favorite for heirlooms.  They work to preserve Native Americn seed stocks.

I also am a fan of Seeds of Change.  One of the best sources of organic heirlooms.

Also, check with your local Master Gardener's group.  We have several local farmers who save native seeds and heirlooms and give away seeds and seedling.

  • You should DEFINITELY check out Southern Exposure Seeds.  Their seeds are varieties (many of which are organic and/or heirloom) that work well in our region.

However, I don't think they'll ship their 2010 catalog until later.

eta: I know one of their seed suppliers is Even' Star Organic Farm in Maryland.  He saves seed from his best crops & sells it to Southern Exposure Seed.  His greens especially he's worked to make really thrive in our climate.
