Poll: What are you willing to splurge on?

NO MORE BABY TALK :)

Every girl I know is willing to spend money on something--- whether it be designer handbags, shoes, expensive clothes, etc. etc.

What are you willing to spend big bucks on and is there a certain brand or type that you particularly like?

Re: Poll: What are you willing to splurge on?

  • Chocolate. It must either be Green & Black's or imported from Belgium.
  • designer handbags, but not LV or anything, $1k or more is just a little too much for me to be spending on handbags.  I can't imagine a time, if I ever get rich, that $1k would sound like a reasonable amount to spend on a handbag.

However, I guess I'm willing to go up to $500 or so, so I guess it's not too too different.

I really wish I were willing to splurge on shoes, but since I never have, I'm too chicken so far.  It might begin a really bad habit.

  • Maybe not huge bucks, but I like to splurge on skincare from Skinceuticals.  I like their antioxidant serums and retinol lotions.  Smile  I've stopped using both since a few months before getting pg but I can't wait to be able to use them again next year.

  • My hair.  Cut and highlight = $$$... but I try to stretch it out so I'm just there 2-3 times a year.

I also think designer jeans are worth the money, but I've only bought them full price once.  The rest of the time, I find them at the Rack.

And I think regular massages are essential for good health and positivity!

  • Good poll!

I have a weakness for designer jeans - my absolute faves are Hudsons because they're so soft and comfy.  But I also have True Religion, Paige, Sevens, Citizens and William Rast.

I also love Gucci but decided that I'm only going to buy stuff on sale.  So I'm counting down until their December semi-annual sale!

  • The better question for me would probably be.. what don't i like to spend money on?  Seriously, I think I have a disease..

I spend big bucks on moisturizer... I love La Mer.  My justification for this is that I skimp on cleanser...

I also love hand bags.  My favorite brands are probably LV and Prada.  I used to like Gucci but haven't really liked their styles for the past few years.  Oh, of course I LOVE shoes - lots of brands.  I like to shop for cute dresses.

*sigh* seriously, i have a disease...

  • in my past life it was anything and everything: nice jeans, designer purses, chanel sunglasses...  did I mention I lived in Scottsdale?

these days I live in a really laid back area and my biggest splurges would probably be home decor items (although even for that I do everything on a budget), craft type items, also I saved and saved all year so I could buy my car outright and while I would love to have turned it in (lease) and picked out a nice new one I am so happy to have no car payment.

It seems backwards b/c I (we) make a pretty decent amount of money in our first "grown up" jobs and live in a relatively low cost area (compared to Seattle) but we lived way more luxuriously when we should have been poor grad students... We often ask ourselves how we could afford that lifestyle (because we did not incur any debt - besides my minimal student loans).  I think all the income we made (we both worked part time) went to "stuff" - including happy hours almost daily - whereas now we are much more open to saving and know that we can't have our parents pay for other expenses like we did when we were in school.  It seems like something always comes up.  We paid for the wedding, then saved for a downpayment on our house, then had to buy all new appliances, then saved for me car, and on and on.

  • I'm with Melissa on the cut & highlight. I mean, you wear your hair everyday, so it's certainly a good thing to splurge on.

I've been known to drop some dough on a pair of shoes--I am partial to Sigerson Morrison--but I always find them on eBay so for much less than retail.  Bags and, in the winter, coats are things you also wear all the time, so I think it's ok to spend more on them.  If they are better made they last longer.  I bought a gorgeous Karen Millen cream coat for $350 when I first got to Boston and I've kept it in good condition and still get compliments on it.  I got my dad to do the splurging on my handbag, a Marc Jacobs, as a Christmas present almost 2 years ago and I still use it all the time.  I spent a lot on a Coach laptop bag 7 years ago but it's so well made I still use it frequently.

  • Hmm, I have a hard time answering this. Compared to what I COULD be spending, I don't spend too much. However, compared to what is cheapest, I may spend a little more in these areas:

    Car

    Purses

    Vacations

    Organic food

I can justify anything... so, I'm still not confessing a splurge. Wink

  • hmmm... honestly not very much as we are pretty frugal.... but I will occasionally splurge on massages for myself b/c I think they are good for my overall well being :)  I said I would do prenatal massages but have yet to schedule one (again, being cheap).
  • I don't often splurge but when I do it's on:

    1. good comfy weatherproof boots (do I sound like a gran or what?)  My recent splurge in this department was a pair of knee-high Merrell's for the crazy snow we've been getting in Vancouver over the past few winters. They look like "city" boots rather than snow boots so I can wear them to work with casual skirts and stuff.

    2. Organic food (like kaesha, I splurge a bit on chocolate too, except my choice is Camino)

    3. Good meals

    4. Good wine

  • For the most part, I'm a no-frills kind of gal.  (Don't listen to my husband if he claims otherwise.)  I am, however, willing to spend a pretty penny on camera equipment.  Lisakeiko, I blame you.  :)

Oh yeah, oops, forgot about camera stuff.  Stick out tongue  John and I both splurge waaaay too much on this.

Dior, don't blame me, blame John.  He's my enabler.  Oh, and if it weren't for Nicole's wedding, I never would have allowed the purchase of our 70-200.  So see, Nicole has played a part in all of this as well.  Stick out tongue

Umm, I don't recall John ever encouraging me to get the 70-200.  And, I bet Nicole can say the same.  :p

  • Man, I wish I could splurge on clothes but I'm too damn cheap! I see a top for $40 and I just can't do it... so instead I just have 3 shirts that currently fit...

I guess my splurges would be vacations and rarely a massage but man it's worth every penny when I do splurge on that!! Vacations aren't really a splurge though, more of a neccesity!!

oh yeah...I forgot about vacations...definitely a necessity :) we don't mind splurging on vacations

  • I'm pretty much a cheapie when it comes to lots of things. I own a few designer bags but all were gifts. I would agree with Melissa about getting my hair done. I feel like being a teacher I have to look presentable at all times, so even in I am wearing a $4 shirt from Old Navy at least my hair still makes me seem professional. haha
  • Food- Organic foods and healthy foods in general are expensive and I do not think twice about it.

    ?

Makeup- I have problems that is all I can say!?

in my past life it was anything and everything: nice jeans, designer purses, chanel sunglasses...  did I mention I lived in Scottsdale?

wow robbi, i totally didn't see that in you! Smile ...but now that you mention Scottsdale, it really does make more sense Wink

i agree though - it's so laid back here (and i work with a bunch of engineers - they sometimes don't even wear shoes Stick out tongue so seriously - no one cares), i really don't spend money on clothes or shoes anymore.  or haircuts.  or eyebrow waxes.  i love nice haircuts and getting my eyebrows done, but i'm too cheap now Stick out tongue  don't bother with makeup anymore either.  if i can brush my teeth and run a brush through my hair, i'm good Stick out tongue  still using the same (prada) purse from like, 6 (or more?!) years ago.

we do splurge on the occasional nice dinner out and on vacations.  and we're looking at buying a bigger house at some point, that might be considered a "splurge" too.  nothing we can't pay for, but could very well be more than i had wanted to spend.  i'd love to get more massages, but am too cheap to go regularly, sigh.

great poll!  it's so fun to read everyone's answers

eta: thought of one more!  a housecleaner.  i would give up a lot of things before i would give up our housecleaner.

  • seems silly...but organic milk!  It's so much more expensive than non-organic milk!
  • Honestly...I don't buy a lot of "stuff", nor do I splurge on it. Maybe shoes, but I'll usually stalk ones I like until they're on sale. Stick out tongue

Truthfully, the only thing I really splurge on is travel - I'd much rather save money on day-to-day stuff and have a really fabulous no-holds-barred vacation. I don't like traveling places and having to worry about my budget, or stay in a dingy hotel, or stuff like that (I've traveled enough that I've been there, done that and have zero interest in doing it again lol).

I tried organic milk because I don't drink milk at all and thought I should be drinking it and organic would be best but I HATED the taste!! I thought it was worse than "regular" milk... Guess I was never meant to be a milk drinker!

Me exactly!!! I never pay full price on clothes. I would love love love a designer hand bag but can't bring myself to spend the money on it. I think the only thing we splurge on is going out to dinner with friends. But two of those dinners could buyt me that one designer hand bag I could wear everyday.

  • It's been a looong time since I've splurged on anything, but pre-baby I would splurge on handbags. My favorite bag had to be my kooba which I have since converted into a diaper bag ;)

Oh, yeah.  I forgot about this.  I just purchased my first L lens - Canon 24-70 2.8.  Should be coming today!  Woohoo!  Big Smile

  • Oh, lots of things!  But mostly:

    1. I agree with the haircur and color....especially the cut.  It is totally worth it to me to go and pay the big bucks for my stylist.  But I only go twice a year to him for an actual style cut, and get trims in between at a cheaper place.

    2. Bath products.  I take a long bath every Sunday night (it's kind of a ritual now), and use Lush products.  I use 1/2 a bubble bar and a whole bath bomb in each one, so each bath ends up costing about $10 (about $40-45 a month).  It's my little luxury, and I love it!

    3. Oddly enough, balsamic vinegar!  It's one of my favorite things in this world, and I usually pay about $25 for a 375ml bottle of 18-year aged.  A bottle will usually last me about 2 months.

  • great poll!!!!!

i don't feel so guilty. hahaha

nah actually we don't splurge much. but when we do, we splurge on vacations.  and nice places to eat.

    =)

my weakness though is housewares and lingerie. BUT i don't spend 'cause i don't walk into the stores! HAHAHAHA if i do, then i have to be dragged out.  yikes.

my borderline splurge is shoes... but again, i don't go to the stores so as not to be tempted in the first place... heheheh =)
