Menu Critique/ apps help

I need some appetizer ideas that will go well with my Christmas eve dinner menu:

Honey Baked Ham

Mashed Potatoes

Mac & Cheese

Green Beans

served with assorted rolls, olives, pickles and cole slaw

Any appetizer ideas?

  • Hickory bacon wrapped asparagus.

  • How many guests are you having?  If it's just a couple people, that's fine, but if there's a crowd, I think you need more variety.  Carrots, cranberries and sweet potatoes come to mind.

I know in our house if you put out the relish tray early, folks'll go to town on those baby pickles and olives.  Cheese and crackers and veggies and dip are always easy.

  • There will be 8 people total.  I will be putting a relish tray out only for dinner.

I always have a problem pairing appetizers, doing the same, or having too many cheese items.

This dinner is for the IL's- they are VERY simple people.  My niece once gawked at artichokes.

eta* I think carrots or cranberries would be good.  What about a stuffing / dressing?

  • If they're simple people, cheese and crackers and veggies and dip is probably plenty.  Add a bowl of mixed nuts.

I had never heard of apps for a holiday meal, or any nice dinner for that matter, until coming to the nest.  Growing up, you just waited til dinner.  Apps were something restaurants tried to sell you when their kitchen was running slow lol

ETA - Dressing sounds good - I think you might try to find one that stands on its own and doesn't scream "I shoulda been served with turkey" lol

Gosh, I saw a great recipe for wild rice with pecans and cranberries in some Nov magazine.  Maybe Martha, maybe Good Housekeeping.  I've got it downstairs.

  • LOL, I know what you mean on the apps.  I have to serve something to keep them occupied while Im getting the food ready to be served (they annoy the crap out of me and bug me while Im busy in the kitchen otherwise, ugh).  Sense my love for them?  haha.
  • What about a simple shrimp cocktail and veggie tray?

Frankly with mac and cheese and mashed potatoes I'd skip the dressing.  If you want to add something maybe another veg- corn casserole is a big hit with my simple ILs.

  • If you want to skip the cheese and crackers how about a tray of crostini. Toast slices of baguette or country bread and top with:

8 oz of Gorgonzola dolce, 8oz of Marscarpone and 1/4 cup chopped hazelnuts whizzed together in the food processor. Then top each crostini with a slice of fresh pear. It is easy and so delicious.

One note, Gorgonzola dolce is a milder, sweeter form of the cheese. If you can find it, reduce the amount of Gorgonzola by half and use more marscarpone. Also, taste and if necessary add a tiny bit of honey to sweeten a bit.
