LA Fitness Anyone?

I am thinking of joining LA Fitness... but I have a few questions I want to ask real people instead of thier sales staff...

I am wanting to have a place to workout when the weather is not so great and a place to swim. So do they have a track or just treadmills? Are the lap pools packed (prolly in the evenings after work about 5 or so I would go)? How much is it at first then each month? I would likely join and go to the one in greenwood... maybe try the southport one depending on which might be busy/less busy...

 TIA!

Re: LA Fitness Anyone?

  • I joined LA Fitness when we moved here in October...it's okay. It's big, clean, and I can always find a cardio machine/weight machine without any trouble, so that's a plus. I usually love the fitness classes, but am not very impressed by what they offer. Sadly, it's still better than what I found at other gyms in the area.

They do not have a track, but have plenty of treadmills. I honestly haven't used the pool, so I don't know about how packed it is. It never really looks too bad to me, but I'm not sure what I would be looking for!

I felt like I was at a high pressure sales event when I went to join the club - I had to be very firm with the sales man (and it really is about sales, not about fitness, so don't let them pressure you!). I had to be adament and told them that I would not pay the initiation/joining fee (I think it was $149), I did not want a contract, and I was not interested in persosnal training packages through the gym (the majority of their "trainers" aren't even nationally certified!).

Since DH and I wanted a joint membership, I was able to get them to drop one of the initiation fees, cut the other one in half ($75) and pay $34.99 each per month. Which I still think is obnoxiously high, but it also includes use of the raquetball court. The initial payment was $145, which they split into two payments.

Overall, the gym is pretty good - I just wish the class schedule was more convenient/had more diversity.

Let me know if you need anything else!

  • Thanks I really appreciate the information. I got a coupon for free initiation fees so that helps and I will likely go and start the process next week. I will be firm with them. I am mainly going for the pool so they better listen :-)
  • Maybe we could meet up at some point! It would be great to finally meet you!

Although maybe not at the gym....I'm always super sweaty gross at the gym...
