What's trick or treating like here?

I'm trying to plan for Halloween.  We didn't get a lot of trick or treaters in California, it's been trickling down to less and less every year ( I think more and more parents are taking their children to the malls etc. because it's supposed to be safer).  Last year I bought a whole bucket of candy and we didn't get a single trick or treater (which of course meant DH and I pigged out on candy for a month until I couldn't take it anymore and threw it away).  We live in an apartment so I'm assuming that that will make the chances of getting trick or treaters even less?  Do kids still trick or treat a lot here?  I don't want to buy a ton of candy and end up eating it all, but at the same time I don't want to not buy any or not buy enough... I don't have the will power to keep my hands off the candy if it doesn't go out my door =)'

Re: What's trick or treating like here?

  • Back in 2003 when I lived in an apartment complex that had like 300 apartments, I boguth like 30 bucks worth of candy, dressed up and the whole nine yards. I got like six kids that came to my door. I was so upset. I know the malls are a huge thing now. If you get candy, just hand out bigger handfuls :) surely the word will spread that your giving out lots of candy. But who knows?
  • We live in a really walkable neighborhood, and we hardly get any trick or treaters.  Every year I buy a TON of candy just in case, and get less than 10 people.  So last year I only bought one small bag, and we got like 20 kids!  WTF?  Last year we actually ran out of candy and I had to turn my light off.  Then we STILL got more kids.  I felt terrible.

This is what I'm afraid of.  Buy a ton and end up not giving out any, or only buying a little and end up having a bunch and running out.  I wouldn't mind buying the ton except we'll eat it.  Going out on Halloween was so much fun when I was a kid, it's sad that the world is such a scary place that kids go to malls now instead, it just doesn't have the same Halloween excitement as being out at night with your parents and flashlights and all the cool jack o' lanterns.

  • I remember when I was a kid.. apartments were the BEST place to trick or treat!  Now, kids are lazy and don't want to go up the stairs ;)

We had about 20 kids last year.. wasn't bad.. was fun to see them :)

  • If you buy too much, can you take some to work or send some with hubby to work? :)

  • I think it depends on your neighborhood. Can you ask your neighbors? The houses in my area maybe get about 10 kids but the houses just a few blocks away and much nicer get a total influx of kids.
  • Whenever I've lived in apartments, I've never had trick or treaters. This year, I live in a gated apartment community, but we have a lot of kids in this complex, so we'll see. I usually buy two regular size bags of good candy. That way there isn't too much left over if no one comes, and if I bring it to work I know someone will eat it.

  • Completely depends on the neighborhood. We nearly run out each year and I buy a lot. We see a lot of kids who arrive in groups by car with their parents, definitely not from the neighborhood either here because it's safer or the candy is better. Who knows.
