Experience with Kaiser?

Hello All,

I have my 8 week (first!) appointment tomorrow.  My employer based medical coverage for 2009 is with Kaiser Permanente, but starting next week we will be doing our benefits enrollment for 2010.

I'm hoping that my appointment tomorrow will help me get some idea of what it's like to go through pregnancy and delivery with Kaiser, but it would be wonderful if I could get some feedback from anyone out there who has already gone through this experience using Kaiser.

No matter what, I'll be using Kaiser services until the end of 2009.  I just need to figure out now if their services will suit me until the end, because if they don't, now is the only time I can change until baby is actually born.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Experience with Kaiser?

  • I'm 28 weeks along and I have Kaiser.  When I found out I was pregnant, I thought long and hard about switching (to Sharp Mary Birch), but ended up staying with Kaiser.  The doctors are nice, it's easy to get in to be seen, and you have the option of nurse midwife or doctor.

In terms of the facilities at Zion (the hospital), the labor and delivery rooms are very nice, but the recovery rooms are AWFUL.  That's why Kaiser gets such bad reviews.  They're small and you may have to share it with someone else (and her partner and her baby and whatever guests they have coming in during visiting hours).  They are building additional private recovery rooms, though, so depending on when you deliver, you may not have that problem.

Also, unless you're induced or have a c-section, they can't guarantee your OB or midwife will be the one to do your delivery.

That said, you can't beat the cost (free for me, based on my health plan) and I've been really satisfied with my OB.

    Hope this helps!

  • My hairdresser just had her first baby 2 months ago and she is with Kaiser.  She didn't have the best experience with her doctors because it seemed like she was always seeing someone new and then when it came to the birth they kept her in labor for almost two days before a doc finally made the decision to do a C-Section.  The doc told her that the reason it took them so long was because the lack of consistency..there were several doctors checking in on her so the last doc came in and finally made the decision.

Other people love Kaiser and have no issues, this was just the experience that she shared with me.

  • I have never really posted on the nest but I wanted to post about Kaiser.  I am currently 11 weeks with my first and I have Sharp now.  I grew up with Kaiser my whole life.  There are going to be plus and minuses with both places.  I can't stand that Sharp charges you to park and Kaiser does not.  Also, if I called Kaiser with a question, I got a response at the end of the day.  With Sharp, both OB and primary care, I wait at least 48 hrs and then usually I have to yell about not getting a call and then they call back.

At Kaiser, friend's deliveries, you labor in your own room but then have to recover/stay the rest of your stay in a room with someone else.  Exactly what previous post said.

Too be honest, I think I was happier with Kaiser but I am saying that now when I am pissed at Sharp.  Who knows.  Like I said before, I think you we like and dislike different things about both hospitals.

  • I had Kaiser years ago, and had nothing but bad experiences with them, unfortunately.  Same can be said for my grandma.

If you are generally a well person who doesn't require much, then they are probably OK.  But for me, especially with identical twins and complications, I am so glad I have a PPO where I can see specialists whenever/wherever I want without all the Kaiser red tape.  I have gotten excellent care with top notch specialists thus far in my pregnancy, and I am not sure I would have gotten that with Kasier.

When my grandma had a stroke a couple years ago, Kaiser made her wait 2 days before seeing a neurologist.  My mom, who is a nurse, said that patients who have a stroke at her hospital (not Kaiser) see a neurologist within 2 hours.

Obviously, I am not a Kaiser fan, but there are people who love it.

    Good luck!

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!
