Christmas Eve Activities

I'm hoping you guys might be able to help me out. In the last year both my step-dad and maternal grandpa have passed away. Previously, my mom spent Christmas Eve with my step-dad and his children and/or her parents/my grandparents while my sisters and I spent the evening with our own families or our in-laws. This year, neither my step-dad or my grandpa will be around and my step-dad's children aren't very inclusive.

I would like to come up with something we can do (a new tradition of sorts) that could involve my mom as well as my H's mom and potentially younger brother (we typically have spent Christmas Eve with H's family). Thoughts? I thought something like the Nutcracker could be a cool/fun new Christmas Eve tradition but my husband, and I'm sure my brother-in-law, would not be too thrilled about that. Other thoughts on holiday activities that go on in Portland on Christmas Eve? Thanks.

Re: Christmas Eve Activities

  • First off, sorry about your loss.

Why not have them all at your house that evening and cook dinner for them?

I have never went out on Christmas Eve for an event, we've always celebrated Christmas Eve at home.

  • Portland Center State will be performing A Christmas Carol. I also believe there is an annual concert series at The Old Church.

I'm always a big fan of staying in and cooking a big, yummy meal on Christmas Eve while watching a few holiday flicks.

  • I just remembered. Not sure if it still happens, but what about the Christmas Ships?
  • You could go to the Grotto. It is decorated for Christmas with a ton of lights, and though it is obviously religious, you don't have to be religious to enjoy it. They have carolers, a petting zoo, performances, and the lights. I think it would be a special place that you could remember your loved ones.

  • Oh I just remembered. The Zoo, has Zoo Lights that they do every year along with high school choirs that go there and and sing in the evenings.
