Vegas hotel recs

I haven't been to Vegas in years. And while I can assume what is good there. Just wanted to hear what is recommended. We will be attending a wedding at Mandalay Bay so I would like it at the South end of the strip.

Oh, something with a low(er) price. I can't stay at Bellagio, Wynn etc. :)

Re: Vegas hotel recs

  • My mid-range go to is Treasure Island.

Although we got a killer deal at THEhotel (at Mandalay Bay) recently.  They really lowered their prices last I checked!

  • My brother just stayed at TI. I kinda forgot about it because it wasn't on Vegas.com. Just looked it up. It's do-able.

Luxor is cheaper and closer though. What do you think of that hotel?

  • I've never stayed at Luxor, but H really likes it. For cheap Excallibur is pretty good for the price. I LOVE New York New York and MGM, but they can be more pricy, but may be worth checking out the prices at least. Stay away from Imperial Palace. That place is all kinds of trashy.

I'm always getting email deals from Excallibur. If you're interested I can forward the next one to you.

  • I <3 MGM! Not sure when you're going but I just saw this:

You should also check travelzoo.com. They always have great vegas deals listed on their site.

H has a personal vendetta against them. He stayed there when he was a kid and the fire alarm went off in the middle of the night and he had to basically run down 8 or so flights of stairs barefoot for nothing. He's still bitter. lol!

  • Oh, and NYNY was comparable to Luxor. Maybe we'll go there. It's just further up the strip. Would it be safe to assume I could walk from NYNY to Mandalay bay??

And what's the weather like there in mid-December?

Thanks for the link! I think this will work perfectly!

I really love NYNY. You can totally walk. In fact, once you cross the street (bridge) to Excallibur you can take the tram right to MB.

The only time I was there in Dec is when I was a kid and it was FREEZING.

Well..there goes the idea that I could wear the dress that I was going to wear in the Keys to their wedding. :(

I prefer NYNY to Luxor, but still don't like it much.

    MGM is good, though!

If you stay farther away than a walk, just cab it up!

Oh, really? Any particular reason? I mean...not for Excalibur but for Luxor.

We could cab it up. But we're trying to save money where we can. Also, I handle claims for cab drivers. Let's just say I don't trust them.

All the hotels we've talked about here except for TI are all within walking distance of MB. So you should be good.

  • When I was in Vegas last (2005) I was there for a Bach party. We walked everywhere except to the Palms. So I was figureing I should be good, but I didn't know with the weather and all.

I think MGM got the most votes and I should push H for that one. He is usually fine spending a little more for a room if it's nicer. He's quite particular!

Oh the joys of working claims!

I can't go anywhere or do anything anymore without it crossing my mind that someone is potentially opening themselves up to a huge liability.

I don't like the restaurants inside and the casino is just blah.  I mean, it's "okay" but for a similar amount of money I would rather stay at the TI.  Just personal preference.

  • Thanks Kim. That's good to know. That's the kind of thing that I have NO idea about because I never go.
  • MGM is a good choice.

But check THEhotel, too.  I think we spent like $70/night or something crazy like that, and it was really nice!

  • If I remember correctly vegas.com had it at around $90 something/night. Which is really good for a hotel. But others were less.

But my H might want it since it's right next to MB.

  • It's WAY worth it for $90.

  • I love The Signature at MGM. It is their newer boutique hotel. They recently had rates for about $179 a night.
  • I am trying to go back and find it. I guess I didn't remember correctly cause I don't even see it listed. :(
  • I havent stayed at Luxor but I also am not a fan of Excalibur. I know they did a renovation recently too but the one time we stayed there it just felt dirty and we had some really gross problems with the room we got and we ended getting upgrade.

MGM is a good choice. The last time we were in Vegas was in march and we stayed at the Mirage and they had just done their renovation so it was really nice. I like MGMs pool more but pools might not matter if youre going in December :)

  • We've stayed at a lot of hotels there...but I really like the monte carlo. It has really nice rooms for not a lot. I didn't like ny ny or excalibur. I found ny ny trashy, and or room at the excalibur was very uncomfortable (although I hear they've changed most of the beds now).

  • I'm guessing Mandalay is out of the running.  For south strip, Luxor was good in the past, but I found it needing some updating when I stayed there last year.  I used to stay there ALL the time before I lived out there.  I've been staying in the upgraded rooms at Excalibur for the past 2 years and have never been disappointed.  The decor is nice and the strip view rooms are great.  Easy trip to Mandalay by the monorail and easy walk over to NYNY and MGM.  I liked staying at NYNY, but rooms can be loud due to the roller coaster.  MGM rooms were nice, but the hotel is so large that it can be quite a hike from your room to the strip.  The elevators were horrible and it took forever to get one that wasn't full.  If you want mid-strip and decent prices, the newer tower of Bally's has nice rooms.  Just make sure you're in the updated rooms (not sure it they're all updated yet).  There is also the Westin Causarina on Flamingo between the strip and Koval (the first street east of the strip).  It's a non-smoking hotel and very nice with midrange prices the last time I checked.  TI is nice, but if your festivities are focusing on the south end of the strip, it's going to be a lot of waiting for and paying for taxis.  If you don't mind being off strip, Sunset Station and Green Valley Ranch are both nice but still easily accessible to the south end.
  • I'd highly recommend trying to bid on priceline to get a Vegas deal. I got the Trump for about 90...5 star :)
