Relocating to Memphis Area-Need Advice

We just found out the DH got a job in Memphis and we need to start the housing search ASAP.  What are some nice areas to check out for housing...we will be renting in the beginning and would REALLY like to find a house.  If it makes a diff...we'd like to keep rent between $800-1000/mo.  It can be the city of Memphis or a sub.  TIA!

Re: Relocating to Memphis Area-Need Advice

  • What size house do you need (number of bedrooms and bathrooms)? A dear friend is moving back to Japan in a few weeks and has a house available for rent.
  • In that price range, I would say you need to look in the Midtown area or in the burbs.  In Midtown, the nicer areas are located close to Union and Poplar Avenues.  Downtown has a few options on Mud Island, but they may be out of your price range.  The burbs, Cordova, Collierville, or Bartlett, might offer you the most options.  Good luck with your search!
  • My Mom has a ridiculously awesome stucoo bungalow in Midtown she would probably rent for 1000. It has all hardwood down redone kitchen and beautiful back yard. Heat and air both electric so not bad on the bills. Custom cabinets. 1800 square feet. The neighbor is really great too and has a beautiful landscaped pool and backyard he doesn't mind letting neighbors use. The address is 1963 Linden Ave, Memphis 38104. Let me know if you are still looking I will let my mom know she could use a renter and if you have any problems she lives nearby  so you could just call.

You'll pay more than that in Collierville. Unless you want a 1 bedroom apartment.

  • I just moved here from chicago with my husband. We bought a 4 bedroom house in Cordova off of Walnut Grove Road. ?We love our house and our little neighborhood is great! ?We are on a tight budget too. Our payments are about 1100 per month.
  • Husband and I just bought a home here in cooper young, midtown off Young Ave. We love it. It's an old house that's been remodeled. 3bedroom 1 1/2 bath. the mortgage is about $800 month. Keep looking and ask around, especially for "flipped" homes (ours was flipped).
