s/o Anti-Virus Software

My 2008 laptop is under extended warranty through Best Buy and has stopped responding consistently. I had this problem in the past and they replaced the hard drive once so far. If it ends up with the same problem 3 times, they have to give me a brand new computer worth what I originally paid.

This time when I took it in, they tell me it's infected with a virus. Plus, it's not a covered service so if I want them to fix it it'll be $70. I say it's that's little suspect.

Well, I just switched in July from McAfee to AVG so I suppose it's possible that it's infected, but wouldn't AVG catch it? DH has been logging into it, so who knows where he's had his dirty little keys.

If not, how does one de-infect a PC without forking over seventy bucks?

Re: s/o Anti-Virus Software

  • Yes, it is still possible. Are you keeping it up to date? Are you running anti-spyware software?

You need to make sure AVG is up to date and do a full system scan. If it can't be cleaned then you'll likely need to reinstall your OP. But be sure none of your files are infected before you move them to a new install.

  • Make sure your AVG is updated.

Do you have Ad-Aware?  If so I would run that, I'm amazed at what it picks up and gets rid of.

  • There's also scanner the runs from you browser call Housecall.
