those who blog...

I just set up a blog, and I'm trying to figure out a few things...

privacy - do you let everyone see it, or only those you "invite"?  If everyone, how do you decide how much to keep private?

Do you moderate all your comments?  I have it set up to do that now, but I'm not sure how much of a pain it will be later.

Is there a way to see how many people have viewed the posts? Or who they are?

Re: those who blog...

  • i let everyone see it.  to make it private, depending on which format you use, i think you just edit the settings.

i don't moderate my comments but then again not many people look at my blog.

    views...you can embed a counter...i got mine from someone else's blog...usually it's a clicky or a link.

  • Are you using Blogger, Wordpress or something else? For Blogger, here's how you set the privacy settings: Go to your dashboard, then Settings, then Permissions - you can choose to let anyone see it, let only people you select to see it (people can email you to ask to be allowed to view), or only other authors that contribute to the blog.

I moderate comments that are more than 14 days old - this is just because I've found that I tend to get the most spam on my older posts. I originally had it set up to moderate all comments, all the time, but honestly it's kind of a PITA and not really necessary unless you have a pretty popular blog - and as someone who comments on other people's blogs, I prefer being able to see my comment right away on their new posts. I can't say exactly why - ego, maybe? Stick out tongue

For viewing stats, I set up a Google Analytics account. It's free and gives you SO much more info than just a counter - it will tell you the most popular pages, keywords that people use to search to find your blog, where your readers live (nothing specific, just countries) and tons more. Love it!

This sounds awesome just b/c I'm a nerd like that.  I will definitely check this out.

I am using Blogger, so I see where to set these things, I'm just trying to figure out how to decide which settings are best for me.

    Thanks!

Ha! I totally misread your first post - now that I go back, I see you just asked if we set privacy settings, not how. Sorry about that! To answer the REAL question: I let everyone see 'em. If it was something ultra private, I might set it to only people I allow, but I don't really post about that kind of stuff.

  • I let everyone see it. I'm fairly uncontroversial on the boards and on my blog, so I don't worry about the privacy issue. I also have people who find me when googling prematurity and I get sweet comments and notes from preemie moms saying that reading Marino's progress is encouragement for them. I don't really keep anything private, but I would never write something negative about anyone in my life on there. I do blog about lots of things people would consider TMI, though, like c.diff, etc. Honestly, googling things like c.diff and finding posts on other people's blogs have comforted me, so I don't worry about TMI. I'm pretty open about things IRL as well.

On blogger, you can delete any of your comments (I've never had to do this).

I've never tried to monitor who/how many read. My blog is really a love letter to my son.

Send me the link when you're up and running!

  • Send me the link when you're up and running!

It's at the bottom of my siggy. :)

  • My blog is not private but I do moderate comments.  In the year and a half I've been blogging I am grateful that I've not had any nasty comments, etc.

I don't use our real names on the blog (just initials) and do my best not to reveal a ton of specifics about where exactly we live, etc. although I have posted about where I and my DH work (which could be a problem if we had some demented stalker or something).

  • No privacy settings for me.  I used Rocket something or other to track my stats, I'll have to look up the name, it's on my other laptop...

Not too concerned w. posting personal info like names and stuff.  I do blur out some info, but there are millions of blogs started every week, so the likeliness that someone is going to find out anything about me through my blog is probably as likely as being struck by lightning.
