Reviewable plays in baseball?
I was watching the Yanks/Angels game the other night and this was a pretty big discussion during the game after all the crappy calls this post season. Not just helping one team (the Yankees), as someone said below. There have been some really bad calls on both sides. How do you baseball fans feel about it? Do you think there should be some calls that are reviewable, while others aren't? No replay at all?

Re: Reviewable plays in baseball?
My DH just called and was reading me an article out of the newspaper. It said they have changed the way they pick umps after all the bad calls this year. Instead of giving some new umps a chance to get the experience, they are going with all older umps. I am not sure how much it is going to help, but I guess we will see.
But, I agree with you guys. There should be some sort of challenge.

I think they need some sort of challenge, or be able to use the instant replay. There are so many calls all season that are wrong. You can watch the instant replay and see they blew the call.

I am going to have to go against the trend here and say that I don't think that challenges beyond those that currently exist (checked swing call deferred to a line umpire, etc) should be available in baseball.
For starters, that is just the way the game is. It's slow enough as it is, do you really want to slow it down further by waiting to check an instant replay? Where would you stop once you started allowing video challenges? So much of the game is a judgment call. Take called balls and strikes for example--if you take the time to review a pitch that was called one way or the other, you are essentially slowing down the pitcher, possibly getting him out of a groove or throwing him off.
I think poor calls are better handled by hiring better umpires.
Considering that many of the blown calls came from veteran umps, I don't see that making much difference.
I do think there needs to be some reviews brought into the game. I don't think that the teams should get a challenge though. I think that there should be an extra ump sitting up in the booth that can essentially "throw a flag" should it be necessary. Balls and strikes shouldn't be brought into it at all, that's the game. However, foul/fair calls, questions on whether a catch was truly made or not, and basically any call that could have been made if there was another ump that could have gotten into position to make the call. Then you wouldn't lose your balls, strikes, close calls at the bags and home, that are part of the game.
However, calls like Mauer's "foul" ball, the debacle at 3rd in the Yankees/Angels game, Utley's dead ball that ended up a single, and every other call like that wouldn't happen. Those weren't too close to call, or even close to it. They were simply errors made that could have been avoided, and in many cases could have changed the outcome of the game.
