My husband and I, along with our 11 month old are possibly thinking about moving to Vegas. We currently live in MN right now and are tired of all the cold weather. I have only been to Vegas 3 times and all those times we stayed on the strip. I know there is life outside of the strip. We would be moving Henderson (?) area. I have heard many people say its not a place to raise kids and its high crime there. I am nervous about moving somewhere I haven't really been too. But also excited at the same time as we might really like it there. Please share your thoughts about living there and the pros and cons.
Thanks so much!!
Re: moving to Vegas
Where in Henderson? Do you know the particular area? I think people are always going to say Vegas is not a good place to raise kids, but in reality, there are plenty of great qualities about Las Vegas that make it a wonderful, kid-friendly town IMO. I'm planning to raise my kids here. I'm not sure whether I will send my kids to private or public school yet, but overall I definitely don't worry about the city having a negative effect on my kids.
The obvious con is the transient nature of the town, which sometimes makes it hard to meet people and sustain friendships.
My husband and I moved here this summer. We bought a house in Summerlin. So far, we love it! There is so much to do outside of the strip. The suburbs seem to be very family friendly. I know in the Summerlin area there are a lot of parks and things like that for kiddos.
Good luck and keep us posted!
I have lived in the Henderson area since my DH and I moved here in 2003. As far as crime goes, we haven't experienced any. We have lived in two apartment complexes and now in our home for a year. The area around Green Valley/The District is beautiful. I work at their other property Town Square, and I know both properties do tons of events. Free movie nights in the park, story time, there is a great water park that is free at Town Square. As with any town there are the good and bad areas.
I am currently going to UNLV for secondary education. I have done teaching observations at Green Valley HS and Del Webb MS. Both were nice schools, I liked both teachers that I met, they seemed competent and in control of the classroom. The kids were well behaved, as far as teens go... haha!
I have been living in Vegas for about 6 years and my husband 9 years.
We mostly lived on the west side of vegas. Henderson is another city of its own but since both are growing so rapidly they ran into each other. I noticed many jobs are located on the south end of Vegas so if you live near the 215 freeway its makes it an easy drive. Some jobs are in the north area and i recommend taking the 95 which lops around on the outside. The middle freeway (i-15) is the worst freeway to travel on. It runs right in the middle of the city.
I'll PM if you are looking for more info. like shopping, resturants, schools, a realtor, etc.
Hi!
My husband and I moved here from Seattle about 4 years ago. Our little one is about to turn 1 in about a week.
Yes - there IS life outside the strip. Before I moved here I didn't think there was either, but you can find mini communities off the strip. I live in the SW and know all of my neighbors on my street and the one behind mine. I think you'll find a lot of people in the same situation - a lot of transplants from out-of-state hoping to meet nice people. I don't think there's more crime here than you would find in most other cities. Just need to be careful and alert.
I would prefer to raise my son back home in Seattle - but being here is not so bad. There are nice parks (and most of them are new!), family friendly casino attractions (they have a nice conservatory at The Bellagio which changes with the seasons--fun for the kids to see), and local shopping centers that also cater to families as well as tourists (The District in Henderson just had their Halloween event where I took my son for trick-or-treating...lots of little kids!!!)
Henderson is nice. It's more developed and established than the SW-- Great parks department, nice restaurants and shopping, and an established school system. My niece is in the Henderson school system and it's ok. I definately wouldn't say the schools here are great but there are some fairly decent ones. They are building more schools here too...so a lot of new ones coming. In my area there have been two new high schools built in the past 2-3 years, a couple elementaries and I think some new middle schools are in the works.
Hope this helps! Sorry if I got wordy!! Trying to take advantage of computer time while my little one is asleep.
