upgrading from Vista64 to W7

ok this is a really dumb question as I should know it but I am just going going to ask as my baby has made my head go dumb :)

I am thinking about upgrading this week from Vista 64 to Windows7 here are some questions I have.

Should I get the 32 or 64?

What do I need to do before upgrading?

I will be doing this on my Toshiba laptop that is less then a year old

Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml

Re: upgrading from Vista64 to W7

  • If you are running Vista 64 then you should be able to use 7 64. Here are the requirements so you can check that out too.

Before you upgrade I would backup everything and get all of your program install cds together.

  • You need 64.  You can't do upgrades where you switch architectures; switching between 32 and 64 bit would require a clean install.  But since your processor already supports 64 bit there is no reason to change down to 32.

You should run a backup of your computer before upgrading as a precaution (and it's good to backup your computer periodically anyway).

  • If you are actually performing an upgrade, then you will have to use the 64-bit edition of Windows 7.  For more information regarding system preparation for the upgrade, this Lifehacker article contains tons of information that is useful.
