Dining room curtain drama

Seriously. I just don't even know where to go from here.

I ordered some curtain panels for my dining room from JCPenney. I knew they were too short when I placed the order, and I intended on sewing a contrasting band to the bottom to make them longer. It took a few weeks or ordering, more ordering, sewing, and more sewing, but I did it. I was pretty happy with the result, although I admit not head-over-heels in love. Well, it was rainy the other night and DH picked up the dog when bringing her in from outside so he could clean off her paws. One of her paws muddied up one of the curtain panels. I didn't care; the panels are 100% cotton, so I just took the one down and threw it in the wash. I washed it in cold water on the gentle cycle. I let it hang to dry. DH went to put the panel up again last night and it shrunk. &$%!@#$ It's a good 6 inches shorter than the other panels. Of course, all evidence of the paw print is gone. But a fat lot of good that does me when the stupid panel is too short!

Gah. I'm getting worked up just typing this.

So what do I do now? Just scrap the whole idea and buy entirely new curtains, or reorder an identical panel and sew an identical band to the bottom? ::whine::

Re: Dining room curtain drama

  • I would probably just order that one panel again and sew the band on at the bottom. So sorry that happened, I probably would have thrown a little fit right there in the dining room. I find shopping for curtains so frustrating! They are so expensive and it's so hard to find the size, color, and style you want in the right price! Those curtain jerks.
  • If the length is okay (doesn't look too odd) how about "shrinking" the other panel.  LOL  May be the most cost effective.  Now the only risk I see is that it may not turn out to be as short as the other.

  • Uuuuugh I hate curtains.  Hate them! I bought four different curtains for our family room before I decided on one that I liked enough to keep.  Oh and the one I found was from Ikea and is not hemmed, so I am waiting on my mom to hem them for us.  For now they are about two feet too long (literally) and ridiculous looking.

Back to your issue! I would buy the new panel and remake it - sorry! :(

Unless it's just a tad bit shorter, like Jackie suggested, then I would wash them all to match. If it's too noticeable, looks like you will have to buy a new one.

  • I hate curtains too! I had the hardest time picking them out for our house.  What I would personally do is buy new curtains and then wash (and shrink) them before hanging them.  I read about it on the D&R board and it worked like a charm.  This way you hang them at the appropriate (shrunken) height and you can wash them in the future.
  • Ugh. The one panel is too short to shrink the others. I want them to touch the floor, and they'd end up being too far off the floor. I did wash all the panels before I did my little project and hung them, so I'm really surprised this one panel shrunk on the second wash.

I probably will order one more panel, and then just know to spot clean them in the future.

  • Well you said it yourself, you didn't "love them" Use that as an excuse to get one's you do like and can really admire. Before you probably settled, so just consider it a lucky accident. lol You may even be able to spend a little more and give your husband the little guilt trip so he doens't give you a hard time for the splurge lol

  • Exactly what Johanna said. Get some news one that you love, though I am sorry that they shrunk I'm sure they were time consuming.
  • Sorry, I'm late in responding. That bites. I totally loved them, but it could be a good excuse to buy some new ones that you like better. Good luck!
