Anyone Hosting Thanksgiving?

We've decided to stay here and have Thanksgiving at our house. I love hosting holidays, but it's also a bit overwhelming. Thank God my H knows his way around the kitchen!

Anyone else hosting this year? How many guests will you be having? Any good table scape ideas/inspirations/must-have recipes??

Re: Anyone Hosting Thanksgiving?

  • We will likely be hosting Thanksgiving this year. EvSIL is hosting one and we are obviously not going there. C's parents told us that they're going to her place anyway. If we host, right now it'll only be my parents and one of my brothers (who probably wouldn't show up). We might add some cousins or something to the mix...we're not at all organized with this. But I love Thanksgiving and definitely want to host it.

One recipe that I might try is stuffed pumpkin. You cut open a pumpkin and add meat and vegetables and bake it. My mom makes it and it's AWESOME.

  • We're hosting!  My parents are flying across the country for us, but my sister and DH's parents aren't coming.  I do have a cousin who lives out here, though so maybe she will come.  I'll probably invite any friends who stay in the area, too.

DH refuses to cook at all, so I will be doing it.  But I am a vegetarian so I said I won't be making meat.  My mom suggested we BBQ the turkey so maybe we'll put my dad on that job.  I'll be making: my green bean casserole (with wild mushrooms, fantastic!), mashed potatoes, homemade bread and pumpkin cheesecake.

  • I'm cooking Thanksgiving but DH's cousin is hosting... basically our house isnt big enough for the 15-20 people we'll have, her house is but she doesnt cook so we're tag-teaming Thanksgiving this year.

I havent figured out my menu yet -- I'm going to do a traditional roasted turkey, I may brine it but not sure yet.  I always roast it with citrus fruits and butter, rosemary and sage tucked under the skin.

Definitely do mashed potatos, either sweet potato-banana casserole or a sweet potato-apple-craisin bake that I tried out last year.  We always have baked mac n'cheese, I'll probably use Pioneer Woman's recipe.  We usually have green bean casserole and broccoli cheddar casserole but I may try something new with one or both of those this year.  For stuffing we'll have sweet stuffing with apples, walnuts, and craisins and sage stuffing with mushrooms, roasted garlic, and shallots.  I'm going to try some homemade biscuits - I'm thinking garlic knots and cheddar biscuits.

For dessert, I'll definitely make pumpkin pie.  I like to do some sort of apple dish - maybe a cararmel-apple cheesecake.  Or I might do deep dish apple pie and mini pecan pie cheesecakes.

I need to figure out appetizers too but haven't thought about that yet.

  • I wanted to, but I think we are going to wait til next year. I think we are going to just do the usual and then maybe host New Years Day this year instead of Thanksgiving and Christmas.. we have things to finish up at the house yet anyways.

  • I know it's not traditional Thanksgiving fare, but I usually serve a Caprese salad with balsamic glaze and fresh basil as an appetizer. It's light enough that it doesn't fill people up, but gets them through the day.

I will most likely do the baking (pumpkin and pecan pies + pumpkin cheesecake). My H and mom will handle everything else. She makes incredible homemade 'bowtie' bread. My mom will make a traditional turkey and my H usually fries a breast as well.

I also usually have zucchini bread on hand for munching. And of course, I am in charge of the alcohol. I do a special spiced sangria.

I think we're having 10 adults and 5 kids this year. Not too bad.
