Have you been to Clarkson Eyecare?

Can you please share your experiences with them?  A location opened up here in Troy a few months ago and haven't heard anything about them, but I know they have several locations.  Then I saw they have an unsatisfactory rating with the BBB so I wanted to hear actual experiences - positive or negative.

Thanks!!

Re: Have you been to Clarkson Eyecare?

  • I just found them to be a big PITA, but they did a good job.  My big issue with them is that I asked in the beginning if I could have my new Rx after the exam to buy my contacts online.  They said yes, then charged me an extra $75 lens fitting fee (I didn't want to try any new brands), wouldn't refund it, and wouldn't give me my Rx without a lot of hassle.  They finally told me I had to buy my contacts from them, and I refused - they wanted almost $100 extra for the quantity than I could get online.  It took 8 weeks, during which I ran out of contacts and had to wear my glasses.  Not the biggest deal, but quite a pain.  DH went to WalMart's optical shop, and had a much better experience.  They were no trouble at all and gave him his Rx without a problem.  Yes, I know it is evil WalMart but it worked out for us.

On the flip side, I have a girlfriend who went to Clarkson in Maryland Heights and had a fantastic experience.

  • FWIW, my eye doctor that I have been going to see for years (since I was a toddler) signed a contract with them and is counting down the day to be able to leave them. He had a private practice and felt that since he was getting close to retirement years he would sign a contract to get his patients options for new doctors and he hates working with them. His staff hates it and everything. I never use to have to pay for my contact until pick up, but this last time I went there I had to pay for them to even order them. Big PITA since we didn't have the money right then and there to get them but I need my contacts (h's work reimburses the money for contacts and glasses but you have to have a reciept. We generally turn the reciept in while the contacts are being order so when the contact are in we have the money to pay for them). I only go because I love my eye doctor.
  • I had lasik a few years ago at TLC and you have to have an annual eye exam (just a basic exam)... i've had it done at the Fenton location and haven't had any problems at all.  However, it was just a basic exam, that's it.  I'd just recommend LASIK! :-)

  • I agree w/ the PITA part. I went to the one in O'Fallon and I was not pleased at all with the accuracy. Not only did they wait until my eyes were so dilated for me to pick out frames, I ended up picking a pair that was $400.00 and did not find out until they rung me out and I signed for it. Now I have them and the prescription is too strong and don't even wear them. I highly rec. Brown Optomotry in O'Fallon off K, it's not a chain like Clarkson. GL.

  • We both went to the Brentwood location.  It was OK but not very personal.  Then they diagnosed DH with Glaucoma (so at least they caught it) but gave him no information so he left there very upset with no idea what to do.  He ended up seeing a specialist and hasn't gone back.  I think they are OK for routine care, but if something was actually wrong, I would not trust them to provide good care, support, or information about options.
