So my job is going to offer us free H1N1 shots next week. I was excited and planning on getting one. After hearing from my co-workers... alot of them aren't getting them because they think that they are not safe. That they haven't been around long enough to really know the side effects. What do y'all think? Would you get a free one?
Re: H1N1 shot?
I just got one today. My doctor highly recommended getting one and I trust his opinion.
Also, I don't think a lot of people realize that the regular flu vaccine has to be created new every year because of new strands. So, it's basically the same thing as the H1N1 in regards to the "newness" of it.
I got it yesterday. I was told, and read, that that H1N1 strand would have been included in the seasonal shot had it started a few months earlier, but by the time it got to the US they had already started the seasonal shot production, hence the 2nd shot. It is manufactured the same way and by the same companies as the seasonal every year.
As with any vaccine there are also potential risks, but do those risks out weigh the benefits? According to my OB the benefits are greater considering I am in a high risk group for complications. Regardless my baby is at risk. The vaccine is a risk, but so is the flu, and tamiflu if it came to that point.
Just do your own research on the CDC website and make your own decision. Good luck!
What the others said about it being made the same as the seasonal. If you get the seasonal without any problems, there is no reason to not get this one.
If your work is offering it, do it. I'm not getting one yet because I want to make sure high risk people have every opportunity to get one first.
This too.
