North Portland - what the heck?

I have class one night a week on cascades campus in Northeast Portland. I was just looking on yahoo and saw in the local news that there was a shooting tonight on the 200 block of killingsworth...my class is on the 500 block of killingsworth...WTF? The shooting was 45 minutes after I left class...

Is that usually a dangerous area? I have noticed that it doesn't look the greatest, but was told it's pretty safe...now I'm nervous to go to class!

Re: North Portland - what the heck?

  • I've lived in and around Portland for 22 years and that is honestly one of the last areas I'd live :D. That area is supposed to be being regentrified and what not. But I'm still not convinced its a safe area :(

  • As long as you're aware of your surroundings, you're fine.  And they aren't random shooting, they're gang shootings.  BTW - they're shootings all over Portland, the media just likes to sensationalize the ones that are in the more diverse areas.

  • It's just fine. I'd be more worried in Hillsboro or Rockwood. I grew up in NE Portland and those are some of the nicest areas in Portland.  Some parts of N Portland are improving. Shootings happen all over the place, and they're generally not random.

    hillsboro really?

thanks for all the tips guys!

i find that i'm always way more on edge, too because i come from 40 minutes outside of detroit..so the city i'm used to is detroit, where...i NEVER felt comfortable by myself, even during the day.
