Speaking of gifts...WWY Buy
For a 16 year old boy who plays too many video games. My brother-in-law just turned 16, and H and I have no idea what to get him. We refuse to buy video games/accessories because he is always getting in trouble about his grades dropping when he spent too much time playing and not enough time studying. We used to buy gifts that he could only use outside--last year we got him a remote controlled helicopter--but now I feel like he might be getting too old for things like that. Thoughts? Your help is REALLY appreciated!
Re: Speaking of gifts...WWY Buy
Does he have a car? You could get him all sorts of car accessories, or a nice wash/wax kit, something like that.
My 16 yo son is taking auto shop in school, and he wants tools for Christmas. We gave him a good starter set for his birthday, and so far have a creeper for him for Christmas.
Gift cards are also always appreciated by the teen group - you can get them for movies, itunes, or just a Visa gift card.
tickets to a sports game (have your husband take him or something)...?

Car accessories (if he's driving) would be a good idea.
When DH was a teenager, he always appreciated movie and casual restaurant gift certificates so he could take me out. My brother, on the other hand, would not have found much use for them, so it really depends on the kid.
I think that would be a really disappointing gift, unless it were something more fun and less practical. DH got a microwave and a set of dishes for Christmas a year before going to college...and we went to a college that didn't allow microwaves in the dorms, and plastic dishes were much more useful in a dorm setting than a full set of ceramic/glass ones. Basically, he got gifts that sat in his closet for 2+ years before he could finally use them!
Depending on your budget...
-watch
-cologne
-clothes from a store of his style that are out of his teenage budget
