Anyone watch 30 Days this week?

We just finished watching it on the DVR.  It was about gun control, and I thought it was pretty interesting.  I didn't really have a position on gun control prior to watching the show, and I still don't know much about it, but I think that criminals would most likely get guns regardless of whether or not it's legal to own one through the black market and private sales.  The woman who was for gun control seemed to be in favor for it because she lost a friend to gun violence.  Of course that is very sad, but I don't know if gun control laws would have helped save her friends life.  I'd love to hear other people's opinions!

Re: Anyone watch 30 Days this week?

  • I grew up with a father that owns guns for hunting purposes - all legally, with licenses and who kept them in a locked safe and unloaded when I was growing up. I was always made aware of the danger of guns and shot my first rifle when I was about 12 years old. I am not for gun control or anti NRA groups. I believe that no matter what, bad people are going to get guns - with or without laws to stop them. The same way people get illegal drugs - even though they are illegal and the same way people got alcohol during the prohabition (totally spelled wrong but you know what I mean!). I think it's up to a person whether they want to own a gun or not. I still get nervous around guns and I take extreme precaution when in the presence of one.?

    ?

I think parents that own guns should be responsible to keep them out of their childern's reach, unloaded and locked away just as my father did - I never touched a single one of his guns - EVER nor did my brother.?

It's terrible this woman lost a friend - a total nightmare but I feel that no matter what the laws are - they are going to get their hands on guns.?

  • I think guns are unnecessary. This is not colonial/pioneer time and we do not have to go out and shoot our next meal. That being said I understand that some people enjoy the tradition of hunting for one's own meat and I respect that. Also how many people do you know who shoot other people using rifles? (apart from Cheney) But handguns have no purpose, at all, other then to take another human's life and I can not support that.

  • You may be right that they serve no purpose in today's society, but criminals are still going to get them, regardless of whether or not it's legal to have them.  Besides that, I'm not sure if I agree that they serve no purpose.  I could maybe agree that noone besides cops and military are allowed to have them.
  • I haven't watched it yet, but I agree completely with Jenny. I grew up with them in the house, my dad even has a concealed weapons permit, and he goes to the range to shoot all the time. While I personally don't really like them, I'd rather know that my family will be protected if someone broke in (who is likely to have a weapon) than not.
  • New Zealand police don't carry guns and British police didn't until they became americanized. I don't think carrying a gun prevents crime I do think (and my cousin who is an English bobbie confirms) that guns do make the gun carrier feel more superior to those without and since the start of gun carrying in England police have become more aloof and not the friendly bobbies walking the beat.

And yes criminals who want guns will always be able to find one. If you want anything badly enough you can get it. It stinks, but that's life.

  • But I don't think our policeman could go to not carrying guns, it just wouldn't work.  Can you imagine a cop who's beat is inner-city not carrying a gun?
  • Well it was that way in London for a long time, but no I don't think we could revert to cops without guns.
